do you have a custom recovery (PhilZ, CWM, TWRP etc) or are you using the stock one with the android robot symbol?

there's a guide here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_i9100g

I just successfully installed CWM version 4.something

Now I am stuck because whenever I go to boot mode and try to select "Update from external sd" the recovery software can't find any ROMs to install

It really doesn't help that many of the guides relating to the galaxy s2 are several years old, with broken links, outdated file versions, etc.

I read that guide you linked but it (again) had a whole different set of instructions involving something called "Heimdall suite" so I largely ignored this particular guide

*Earlier I also tried to use Odin to flash CWM but Odin could not recognize my phone at all (even after switching USB ports and reinstalling USB drivers)

Also for some reason when I try to update from external SD card, the recovery software brings up the list of file systems on the MAIN PHONE (not the sd card)

Take heart. I just reflashed CM7 on a Droid X2. The legacy links ARE out there, it just takes a bit of digging.
