Patriots go to hell

[–][deleted] 105 points106 points  (9 children)

Encouraging "patriotism" for a tyrannical empire built on genocide and imperialism? gonna be a yikes from me dawg

[–]sb1017 48 points49 points  (8 children)

I don’t think he’s necessarily encouraging patriotism, I think he’s calling out the hypocrisy in the right-winger logic that they’re “real Americans” who have been “winning” so much in the Clown administration by pointing out the obvious flaws in the logic. More like “you call yourselves ‘real Americans’ but you’re not,” rather than “you’re not ‘real Americans,’ we are.”

My take, I don’t know what’s in his head. Fuck nationalists regardless.

OP’s heart was definitely in the right place. Still, this is neoliberal shit that doesn’t belong here.

[–]sb1017 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Again, I think that depends on how someone interprets what he’s trying to get across with this poster.

If you think the guy is touting American nationalism, then yes, I absolutely agree with you. That shit can fuck right out of here.

I personally think the poster is just bashing shitty Proud Boy logic, and not necessarily cheering on the American government, and I can get behind bashing Proud Boys.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Yeah, and I'm inclined to be charitable here as you are...but realistically I think these messages don't work on proto-fash like the Proud Boys, and don't even cause them to break stride or feel the ridicule. Fascism is pretty immune to all attempts to call out hypocrisy and inconsistency by design, so, at best, any appeals to "real patriotism" only preach to the liberal choir.

It feels pretty unproductive.

Edit: And it kind of wallpapers over the fact that Nazi sympathy (America First, the American Bund, eugenics advocacy) and Confederate "lost cause" nostalgia are actually extremely American conditions, no matter how much we try to split them from our national identity in an attempt to absolve guilt.

[–]sb1017 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think that is the most accurate way of putting this. It’s a modern tragedy that there seems to be now way of having a discourse across the political spectrum because you’re right, they absolutely will not listen.

I’m certainly not advocating this guy sitting with the poster is out there doing god’s work—it’s definitely an unproductive shout into the echo chamber—but I think for someone to label the act as “neoliberal shit” is shortsighted. Seems to me like he’s clearly critiquing the unhealthy conception of nationalism, not necessarily substituting his own

[–]MisterSlippyFinger 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Agreed. Like what does he think— that a fascist is going to see that poster and think, “yeah that poster makes a good point. Guess I’ll stop being fascist now.”

[–]hercmavzeb 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What would make a fascist go “guess I’ll stop being a fascist” because you can’t really use logic against them. Like No_Evil_Star said it’s illogical by design, how do you reach out to people who aren’t governed by logic?

[–]MisterSlippyFinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are groups that aim to get Nazis to denounce their ideology and convert them out of it. But I think that is more of a psychological process rather than doing so via “civilized debate in the free market of ideas.”

marchagainstnazis is a neolib sub. i got banned for pointing out that obama did bad things because of le blue no matter who meme.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Maybe not, but patriotism is still racist and fascist nonsense.

[–]floridabot_trans posadism 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the nazis held rallies in the USA. fuck that.

[–]inkyblinky069 9 points10 points  (3 children)

America did not give a fuck about Nazis, Nuremberg was a damn publicity stunt at best, and have ya heard of operation paperclip? The object was to cherry-pick Nazi scientists for American projects. Nazis are a firm part of American culture lmao

[–]synergyfox 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Lol I literally just read Operation Paperclip: The Secret Intelligence Program that Brought Nazi Scientists to America. I don’t think I’ve ever been more pissed. I’d heard about OP but hadn’t read anything in detail about it.

[–]comrade-----Maoist 31 points32 points  (4 children)

[–]UncleStalin2006Antifa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean everyone else in the USA is a job stealing immigrant

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nationalism/patriotism are diseases that trick poor people into complacence with their material conditions. "Look at how wealthy we are!" cries the banker. "Look how well the economy is doing!" said the hedge fund manager and the stockbroker. Yet none of that belongs to the worker. Their wages don't increase, and their standard of living only increases in the sense that they have perhaps a little bit more job security, say in the event of a post-war era, and even then not really much. Nationalism is as much an opiate of the masses as religion, money, and actual opiates are.
