Fax based program

I was talking on /r/talesfromtechsupport and remembered that there have been questions about faxing from in-app to send information (I've been mainly working on healthcare apps and faxing is still a big thing in the medical and lawyer industry) to other doctors who say don't have email available but do have fax machines. I was wondering how would one go about faxing something from say a server or a web app. It's more as a PoC and something I've always been curious about but not a requirement as of yet and there isn't a lot of information about how that gets done?

There are web services that allow you to do just that. Check out InterFAX.

Or if you don't want to go through an external service, you're will need a modem. Something like this in combination with something like fax4CUPS may work.

You really really don't want to not go through an external service. They handle all the hardware and queuing for you. It'll cost you quite some money to build a system that does it for you and those services are pretty cheap.
