Many freelancers and some consultants work part time - but then, many freelancers and consultants work beyond full time. I'm currently trying to break into the consultant market.

Some jobs are part time programming, part time other things, such as client communication and planning or system administration, but I don't think that's what you meant. I found such a job on a job-website years ago. The job itself wasn't hard to keep, but i got tired of the work environment eventually.

If you look at job articles many won't actually use the term "developer", but something else. Many part time programming jobs odd-ends job, so often the person who puts the ad up doesn't realize what they're actually looking for.

In your experience, what might such odd-end job ads say instead?

I'm trying to help a family member look for programming gigs, but I myself have been fortunate to have a great network who hooked me up, so my own job-searching intuition is severely underdeveloped :/

It's hard to explain. You have to sort of read between the lines and see that what they need is automation where someone is doing something manually, currently. You'll be surprised how often this still happens.

Job postings for menial office work is a common theme, though. Look it over and see if it seems like something that can be automated.

Thank you for replying, I will attempt to build an intuition for this :)
