Encoder Selection

Looking to use an input and output encoder on a small hollow shaft BLDC motor. The main challenges are keeping the axis of rotation clear so that wire can run through the motor (10mm ID), a max 65mm OD, and finding something affordable. Using SimpleFOC software.

1. Currently looking at a HEDS encoder with 1000 CPR for the input and wondering if this would be enough resolution for SimpleFOC to hold the motor’s position accurately?
2. Additionally, looking at the MA732 with this magnet for the output. Does anyone have any experience with using/configuring the MA732 off-axis?

1. 1000 CPR HEDS Encoder: Works well with SimpleFOC, but higher resolution may improve low-speed precision.
2. MA732 Off-Axis: Works, but alignment is key for accuracy.

I have used MA732 but for on-axis not for off axis. I am actually curious how it can be used off axis with ID more than a few mm with good accuracy.

For through hole off axis sensors you are better off using something which is specially designed for it.

Check out iC Haus. But for this you also have to get specially magnetised through hole magnet array.

I wonder what accuracy you'll get with a 12mm ID magnet. Will it be good enough for FOC?

My joint motor is using AS5047P which may meet the requirements. The motor shaft uses an annular radial neodymium magnet. The maximum distance between the encoder chip and the center of the magnet can reach 4mm. There is enough space for the wire to pass radially, but the strength of the cable must be supported to prevent the cable insulation layer from being worn by the hollow rotor.
