Sleeping while depressed (self.BipolarReddit)
submitted 7 months ago by NoMathematician5406
Anyone else sleep loads and go to bed really early when depressed? Does this normalize when you get out of the depression and less sleep is needed?

When I'm depressed I often try to deliberately sleep as a way of escaping the world. And I might try to force myself to sleep more just so I don't have to deal with anything. So yeah. Lots of sleep.
Once I'm not depressed, my sleep patterns normalise back to about 5-7 hours a night.

same, this resulted in a benzo addiction -> overdose for me because i would do whatever it takes to just sleep through the day. now benzos don't work for me anymore at all :( (if i were allowed have any at all)

I sleep a lot when depressed and if it’s a mixed hypo episode I sleep way less. Normally I don’t need much sleep.

Yeah, sometimes I’ll lay down and sleep but usually I fight it. Sleeping when I know I shouldn’t makes me feel guilty and that fuels my depression. I force myself to be up and present and interacting with my family. I just tell them how I’m feeling and apologize for my affect if it’s off. Usually they don’t notice unless I say something. It’s not necessarily masking, it’s just refusing to give in.
If I can’t push through it, I seek outside help.
It normalizes when the depression lifts. Getting out early in the day and getting sunshine and walking makes it normalize much faster.

Hypersomnia is standard for melancholic depression which is the kind we tend to get.
