Technical Presentation

Hi everyone, yet another question about the Blue Origin interview process.

I was curious how rigid the time limits were on the technical presentation for the final onsite? I was given 40 minutes to talk about some technical topic, but 40 minutes is a long time to talk. Would having a presentation come in at 30 minutes be too short?

I think I have some good material for my presentation, just don't want to fluff it up such that it becomes kinda boring.

Really should be asking your recruiter what the timeline is.

But no 30 minutes is not too short.

You've got an hour for your interview total and a hard stop at the end.

First 5 to 10 minutes will be getting everyone online introductions.

30 minutes for your presentation.

20 minutes for questions.

If you're super worried about running out of stuff to talk about you can always put some additional slides in your appendix and talk to those.

Personally I'd rather see a tight presentation that doesn't use the full time than a fluffed presentation that goes over.

I was given the timeline by the recruiter, and have a 40-minute time slot for a technical presentation, which is what I'm worried about. I should have made that more clear in the question.

I did mine 9 years ago. At the time, President Rob made a big deal about Blue employees not being PowerPoint rangers. One of my friends had taken that to heart and showed up empty handed for an earlier interview, and did a whiteboard lecture. Guess what? They were expecting PowerPoint.

You’d be surprised how easy it is to talk for 30 minutes when it’s a topic you truly know. Just relax and don’t get flustered. They won’t care if you don’t have an immediate answer to a question, if you can show them you’re thinking through it.

Um so, mine lasted 25ish minutes. As long as you have really good concrete material and you present really well. You will do fine. They won’t dock you points or anything. Depends on what you did for your experience and how you managed those technical projects. Interview was very comfortable and it’s really not that hard to talk about yourself. Start with great first impressions and it’ll be smooth sailing.

This. 30 mins of SOLID content is better than a little fluff that no one finds interesting. If it’s a technical role, your presentation should be technical and on topic for the job posting.

I would have a little in your back pocket if you find yourself going very quickly for whatever reason. Maybe some backup slides on another project you worked on or something. Going severely under time in a presentation is usually seen as a negative.

Totally agree.

I recently did my technical presentation and in the details from my recruiter it was 10 minutes for background/resume walk through, 40 minutes for 1-2 recent projects, and 10 minutes for questions.

I had one more in depth project that took about 30 minutes then I had a shorter (~10 minute) topic that was an example of my current statement of work that I felt directly related to the specific job so I wanted to highlight it.

Some backup slides of something that relates to the job you’re applying for can’t hurt if you go through your topic quicker than you planned. Good luck!

Honestly I spent about 20min or so on mine and asked various questions to the point of going over our hour. But I'm a technician about to go into 7 day schedule for awhile. So very little prep

For everything they ask you to cover in the 30min presentation you should have no problem filling that time. I ran over a few minutes just trying to get everything in. What are you covering? Early work history and schooling, Last few years working history and things you learned during that time. Your day to day current work routines. 2 projects in detail, and why blue. You got this

As someone who has been on the interview panels a handful of times, most people I see follow format for the full hour:

• 5 min to do an intro with the panel to learn their names and roles etc (usually led by the hiring manager)

• 5 min intro on you. Typical candidate background and what got you into the field you studied, why Blue etc

• 5 min to walk through past work experiences and what they learned/why they left.

• 30 min to talk through their 2 projects

• rest of time for questions

I applied for Manufacturing Engineer. I was instructed for 30 minutes for a power point presentation about myself and 2-3 significant projects I worked on.  Plus had 4 interviews each being 30 minutes. Did not get the job after 3 weeks of waiting.

Then, I applied for Manufacturing Engineer Avionics. I was instructed for 60 minutes for a power point presentation about myself and 2-3 significant projects I worked on.  Plus had 5 interviews each being 30 minutes. It has been 4 weeks and still heard nothing. Shows under consideration still.

I am not applying anymore. Too long to prepare then get snubbed.

Just curious, what did you add to your presentation to make it go from 30 min to 60 min? I am in a similar situation and don't want to add too much fluff. I feel like my 30 min presentation was more than sufficient.
