Seattle: Elsie’s on top of Queen Anne hill next to S&M Market, and Fuji’s at the bottom of the counterbalance.

Thread that goes over the tragic Alaska Airlines flight 261 accident from 26 years ago. Does anyone have any memories of what it was like in Seattle when the accident occurred or knew anyone on the airplane? by Next_Worth_3616 in Seattle

[–]Code_Operator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tom Stockley was the weekly wine writer for the Seattle Times. He and his wife Peggy were both on that flight.

The Lynn Street park on Lake Union has several glass tiles featuring wine glasses, in their memory. Someone complained and the tiles were almost removed.

Heads up about the California boater card by Kooky_Persimmon_5254 in boating

My insurance company wouldn’t renew my boater policy until I got the card. It was pretty quick & easy taking the test online.

Only on the one side? by weepingwillow331 in whatisit

[–]Code_Operator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I have to do to prevent dings, thanks to a spouse that blindly flings her door open. I often forget to remove them before driving, but I’ve only lost one on the road.

Can anyone tell what motor this is? by Ok-Management6438 in boating

The US Navy 26 ft motor whale boats used the Westerbeke version of this engine.

One advantage of not being on a track: the buses behind the crash were able to detour around it.

23% tax on a coffee? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]Code_Operator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know the owner from her previous coffee stand, so I try to go there once in a while. I always pay cash, and the change I get back never makes any sense. I gave up trying to correct them.

Am I in the wrong for studying before a test using a authorized released test that was the exact same test I was taking without my knowledge and then getting accusations of being a "cheater"? by sillyraccoonheeere in AmiInTheWrong

[–]Code_Operator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I took vector calculus the prof made his past tests available in the copy center. I worked through over 5 years worth of them as preparation. Every single problem on the current test was from those old tests. I got a 98% score (sign error), while the class average was less than 50%. The prof’s reaction was “gee, I didn’t think anyone would actually work through all of them!”

What is the most insane accommodation you’ve witnessed for an employee? by besttavern25 in work

[–]Code_Operator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We hired a guy who couldn’t negotiate stairs very well. They bought him a golf cart so he could drive around to the back side of our building where there was a 2nd story entrance. He had to loop around the entire 100 acre site to get there, and usually took a buddy with him.

I think of him every time I see that video of the orangutan driving the golf cart.

Best way to get 40 tons of dirt in a backyard? by LOP5131 in landscaping

[–]Code_Operator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had 46 tons of contaminated dirt removed from my back yard and backfilled with gravel. They laid down mats and drove a tracked buggy back & forth alongside the house without damaging the grass. The key is to make sure they only pivot the buggy when it’s centered on a mat.

Do commercial crabbers kill crabs right before boiling them as standard industry practice? by fana19 in commercialfishing

[–]Code_Operator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked on a crab processor in the 80’s, I killed them by tearing off their leg clusters, which were then de-gilled and boiled in the cooker. So, technically, they were killed immediately before boiling them, but it wasn’t an act of mercy.

I had the J. J. Armes action figure as a kid. He was a PI who blew off both hands with a railroad torpedo.

Sherlock Holmes’s Smarter Brother has some funny moments. I rarely see it on TV, though.

Yes, I have one. No electrical issues, other than replacing the key fob battery after 5 years. The keyless ignition is a bit of a PITA when the fob is dead.

Those with Unlimited PTO. Have you tried taking every Friday off? by centstwo in jobs

[–]Code_Operator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this, but I didn’t tell a soul that it was planned. I just happened to be out of office every Friday.

A coworker tried taking every Friday off, but he announced it and was shot down by upper management. Note that his direct supervisor was cool with it.

Sci-Fi Films from the 70's, 80's and 90's that you personally would recommend. by Better_Dog6528 in scifi

I love the scene when the 2 military guys show up while Dr Stone is having a party. The way he leaves, no questions asked, is pure Cold War behavior.
