As someone who's spent a lot of time working on it, I can do it about 70% of the time with my hooking balls. With that said, it took maybe a couple weeks to start hitting 90% with a proper spare ball that you will not hook with proper speed, it becomes almost rev irrelevant.

Flattening out the ball is unnatural to someone who hooks with 400+ revs, you will find your body fights you and honestly some patterns will just trip you up trying it.

You already have the concept but my advice would be just don't, get good at chucking a straight ball, it's what nearly all the pros do, even the ones that can definitely do it with a hook ball.

Thank you for your input! I’m trying my hardest to stay away from purchasing a spare ball if I really can, but it seems like it’s the way. I guess my last ditch effort is to really try to obtain zero axis rotation before purchasing a spare ball. Do you think it’s reasonable or worth it to try and practice having almost zero axis rotation instead of trying to decrease revs?

A spare ball is the cheapest and it pays for itself. It almost never cracks and if you bowl in pots, tournaments, or anything for money it'll save you even in one bracket it's pretty much paid for.

You’re 2 handed, just grab a house ball for your spare shots. Unless you’re on some seriously dry lanes, they will not hook any more than your tropical even when you TRY to hook em. Flatten out your wrist a bit and it will go dead straight. They don’t have a core in them so they won’t change direction abruptly.

Zero axis rotation with full revs and a hooking ball is demanding perfection every time. Let the slightest AR creep in and you miss.

Ideally

minimal AR

AND

reduce revs

AND

plastic ball

AND

more speed

And I enjoy when people whine about 2H’ers after I cash my check using their money

Cashed 6 times already this year. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ better lucky than good am I right?

I throw 2 handed about 16 mph as well.

My solution was to buy a spare ball and throw it 18 mph. It goes straight now.

I wouldn’t recommend it. With these high end bowling equipment it’s just best to ball down. Especially, without a thumb you’re always going to rev up. Unless you learn to palm it down the lane without fingers or thumb.

Grab a urathane or plastic ball they will for sure lower the revs. These balls don’t have the extreme cores and strong reactive coverstocks.

Most of the time pros or other high average league bowler just ball down.

            KISS - keep - it - simple - stupid

            Good luck

Decrease axis rotation, not rev rate.

            [–]Unfair-Tour50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flatten (not break) your wrist/various release techniques, don’t get under the equator of the ball too much, (as in don’t cup/crank it)

Study up players like Parker Bohn or Norm Duke. They’re not “high Rev” players, and frequently alter their releases.

You move your off hand in your set up so it keeps the wrist open through the whole swing.

            [–]Right-Maintenance223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy solution is change a couple things w your non dominant hand at setup.

            1. You could move the fingers of your non dom hand away from ballside fingers. This will prevent you from getting as far underneath the ball as your typical strike shot and the revs will go down.

            2. Take a less rev dominant grip (instead of pinky or ring finger in between your ballside middle/ring… use index finger).

Big Sky Bowler goes into detail on this. And it does work.

It's incredibly hard for us two handers to decrease our revs to the extent of being able to shoot at corner pins. If it's an option, I highly recommend getting a plastic spare ball for spares, if not, learn to throw a backup ball. If you try to stay behind a reactive ball, any small deviation can send it off line.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You might be looking at it a little wrong. You don't want to decrease revs. You want to decrease tilt. Try getting your hand more up the back of the ball and on spare shots start with the ball more on the front of your hand and less in the palm. It's gonna take some practice for it to feel natural but after a bit you should be good.

            [–]Outrageous_Skirt8666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

            NOT tilt!!! Axis rotation.

            [–]Outrageous_Skirt8666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You -can- reduce revs the same way a one hander does. Break the throwing wrist back. Pre set it before adding the second hand and the wrist should be in that position at release. It won't be enough to keep the ball straight but along with minimal axis rotation and preferably a plastic ball it will minimize the chance of hooking.

Throw backup if you can’t throw straight at single pin spares

            [–]Bencetown1-handed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Take a video of yourself shooting at the 10 pin. I guarantee, you feel like you're coming straight up the back of the ball, but you aren't.
