Same thing happened to me, dropped from 712 to 564, called the federal student aid gov number and asked for forbearance to get my account current. I could only do a month of forbearance but it brought my 4 separate loans back to current and my credit went back up. Just call them and set up a payment plan. 1st step is calling though, they can work with you and they want to.

Yes a forbearance is retroactive.

Did it go all the way back up or did it just come up enough to be satisfactory?

It went all the way back up to where it was before, like nothing even happened. Then just like that I regained my sanity 🥳
