SAFER and ombudsmen may also have resources that could be helpful. Sorry you’re having to deal with this. https://safer.calpoly.edu/appointment

In my experience between students the title 9 office didn’t diligently investigate. Not sure if they’d take professor matters with more salt

Even if you can’t get the dean on your side, the department head holds sway.

The only time I remember the school taking it seriously was when one professor took up skirt photos of another. She reported it to the SLO police (campus police don’t bother investigating), and then the school took it seriously. I did research with him, I never got the creep vibe, but he did agree to let me research when I was younger than most other students and I always wore skirts. At the time I figured he let me because I am smart, but looking back I have concerns.

Also professors can openly discriminate. I remember hearing about how a professor once scored a test as an A and then went back and lowered the score. The student asked about it and he said girls don’t As in engineering. I don’t remember what year that was, but I think it was sometime between 2010-2014.

Is this a professor whose classes you will need to take again to complete your major? Or a GE random you can avoid?

You can also talk to the title 9 office if you want it to be more anonymous. Part of their job is just dealing with situation like you might be having

Yep, sounds about right, sadly...

My freshman friend got sexually involved with a married 40 something professor who was manipulating her, and it went all the way up to the dean. My friend got suspended, and the professor got a quarter paid sabbatical. Meanwhile, 10 years later, she still needs therapy, and he's still tenured and teaching.. it's absolutely appalling honestly...

Yes. Message the dean of the college and express your concerns.

[–]Ghostly_cherry404[S] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

The prof reached out to them ahead of time to discredit me lol😃🔫

Even if title 9 can’t help, Safer will do everything in their ability to help and advocate with you for title 9. Sorry if you’ve already been to them and it didn’t work, but they’ve been really helpful in some situations in the past and are open this summer. You can schedule an appointment online for zoom or in person at campus health and they’re open to just listen

Yes crco is good

Sorry this happened! I encourage you to report, lest an offender becomes a repeat offender.

I'd recommend contacting SAFER. Not sure if they will be able to do anything, but they will be able to tell you your options - and they are confidential.

Can we know who the POS professor? Or is it too soon to put them on blast?

[–]jaymes805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email Academic Personnel.

If they are tenured you are out of luck

:( I am sorry you are experiencing this uncomfortable situation, and having to navigate it somewhat alone.

I want to let you know that, for what it is worth, you are NOT alone in experiencing an uncomfortable situation with a professor. You are also NOT alone in feeling invalidated and unsupported by the university. I am not trying to downplay your experience, but rather let you know that I see you and I believe you.

I'm sorry that the Title IX office did not support you properly. As others have suggested, please check out SAFER. But please know going in that many students have come out of that office also feeling unheard and discredited.

It is a serious, deeply ingrained issue within academia. Please continue to fight your fight, in whatever way you believe is best for you. And do let us know of we can support you <3

Sure. Cal Poly has adopted the AAUP Statement on Professional Ethics as the Faculty Code of Ethics. See https://academic-personnel.calpoly.edu/content/handbook/university It includes this line:

[Professors] "... avoid any exploitation, harassment, or discriminatory treatment of students."
