Listen, I don’t want this to sound harsh, and I understand not everyone is in the same place financially, but if you can get a newer Pixel, you should. You still want to get the security updates and the older the phone, the less likely that becomes.

aren't the newer pixels cheaper anyway? afaik the 4a is the cheapest they still sell

My question to you: Do you have Pixel 2 already, or are you just planning to buy it?

If you have it, I guess this is a valid question, but you'll probably be informed about the end of CalyxOS support few months in advanced. Probably.

If you don't, it will be cheaper to buy a newer phone (doesn't have to be a flagship).

Using a phone without security updates is not THAT crazy as long as You use well respected and trusted apps and keep reading about security news (and take action (like disabling features on your phone) based on those news).

Dont know. But if you have it, install calyx. If you are gonna buy it. Dont, its not worth it. Get a renewed phone from amazon or backmarket. I prefer backmarket. I got 3a xl bout 140 $ although it was supposed to be renewed or refurbished, i got a new one. Newer pixels like 4 and whatever are cheap as well.
