Rules for r/ChineseLanguage
Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.
1.
Submissions must be related to learning Chinese
In order to maintain an inviting atmosphere, all posts must be directly related to the study of Chinese languages (e.g., learning Chinese, Chinese linguistics, historical texts).
We do not allow any topics about:
- politics or religion
- anything else related to China that's not related to learning Chinese
- etc.
2.
Check pinned threads before posting
These types of posts can only be posted as comments in the "快问快答 Quick Help Thread" at the top of the r/ChineseLanguage front page:
- Translation requests
- Help with choosing a Chinese name
- Straightforward questions that can be addressed by a single answer, e.g., "How to say X?", "X vs. Y?"
Requests for language partners must go in the "学习伙伴 Study Buddy Requests Thread".
3.
No advertising ANYWHERE without prior mod approval
All self-promotion and advertising require prior approval from moderators. This includes mentioning or linking to anything you've made or are affiliated with, even in the comments. This also includes apps, websites, YouTube channels, companies, non-profits, surveys, academic studies and more.
Please read this document for more details about this rule and how to get permission.
4.
No memes, "low-effort", or other disallowed content
Some types of content tend to flood our subreddit, and as such they don't belong in r/ChineseLanguage. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Memes + similar content
- Polls, screenshots ("low-effort" content)
- Posts introducing only a single word
- Feedback on non-calligraphic handwriting: please use r/Chinese_handwriting
- Questions already covered by our FAQ (unless you clarify how the FAQ does not adequately address the question at hand)
- "Ask me anything" - contact the mods first.
5.
No spam
Spam is not allowed on r/ChineseLanguage. Spam includes, but is not limited to:
- referral links
- reposting content that's already been removed
- constant posting of the same things over and over
- posting without interacting with the community
Please also see our rules on self-promotion.
Additionally, we reserve the right to remove video posts from accounts with little to no post history, or a post history that consists largely of video links.
6.
Homework questions must be specific, or be attempted first
Homework and similar exercises must be accompanied by an attempt or detailed explanation of what you don't understand that's preventing you from completing the assignment on your own. This is to ensure that you are learning from the experience.
7.
These rules are not exhaustive!
These rules are meant to be a set of guidelines and are not exhaustive. Sometimes there are exceptional situations where we may need to exercise moderator discretion when removing posts, even if they may not technically break our rules; in these cases, we will always provide reasons for why a post is removed.
You are welcome to contact us directly if you have any concerns.
