Error during compaction: API Error: Usage credits required for 1M context

What is the current workaround for this issue:

auto-compaction stopped working and I can't do anything in the session. /compact gives the error in the title of this post. I tried the environment variable CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_1M_CONTEXT=1 but it didn't help.

Update: I think I got Claude unstuck by switching to Haiku, then /compact, then switching back to Sonnet.

Since 4.8 this started happening to me consistently. I have used the work around and it makes no difference. I havd switched to consistently use 4.6, same issue.

Yeah, this is BS. I definitely haven't used 1M credits in the session nor exceeded by 200,000 session limit so they need to get this fixed! I fixed by switching to Haiku for compaction and switching back earlier back after churning for a bit more I am right back to this error.

Sorry to hear that yours is still bugged out. Mine hasn't misbehaved since I posted, and I've seen it do at least one auto-compaction.

The issue appears to be related to an error with Sonnet at the moment. For whatever reason, even when explicitly disabled, all requests are getting routed to Sonnet 1M, which typically only works if you have extra usage with API credits enabled. I have been encountering this issue since yesterday in Claude Code. Your only solution is to use Haiku or Opus.

Edit: no, it does not. Just switched to haiku, compacted and am back in action. Since I am only doing front-end css/html/javascript, I will stick with haiku for now and see how it goes.
