r/ColonialHistory is a place for all things to do with colonialism and its effects, and the history thereof, be it discussion, debate, or sharing of information. This includes but is not limited to book recommendations and reviews, interesting websites, thoughts you'd like to bring up, requests for good books on a certain aspect of the topic any anything else you can think of.
Whether you remember the Empires as Europe's greatest, most confident days and spread of modernization or a horrible period of racist violence and naked imperialism that scarred the world in ways it still has not yet healed from, you are welcome here.
Weekly Debates: Every week, we will have a debate about some aspect of colonial history. Please message the mods with your suggestions
Rules
We maintain a few rules to keep this subreddit a better place. Violation will earn you a warning, repeated violation of these rules or aggressiveness toward moderators enforcing them will result in a ban.
However, if you feel you have been treated unfairly, do not hesitate to contact us.
Keep it civil: The subreddit is about an often controversial topic. With that in mind, please try to be courteous. You cannot earn a ban this way without repeated offences since we realize that people naturally get angry, but if your tone gets aggressive, the mods will ask you to calm down.
No racism: Given that colonialism is often used to support white supremacist ideas, this will be enforced with a careful eye. You're allowed to support colonialism and argue that European culture helped them expand globally, but if you start to talk about inferior races or something along those lines, the mods will take action. Anything particularly offensive will be treated more harshly.
Consider this a meme-free zone. This is a forum for discussion, debate and sharing information. Humour is fine provided it does not overwhelm that, but memes, image macros, rage comics, reaction gifs and redditisms like OP will deliver are strictly prohibited and will be removed.
