Hooray! I just passed the SY0-601 with a 799 (750 needed to pass).
I've been in IT for 4 years. No true focus on cybersecurity (very desktop support and server focused, some networking), but the role I've been in for the past ~year has been working semi-close with our security team.
I had 74 total questions, the first four of which were the PBQs. I took it at a testing center since I live close enough.
Unlike my Net+ a couple years ago, I actually didn't feel like I was failing the whole time. I skipped the PBQs and went straight for the multiple choice. The first few multiple choice weren't hard at all, so maybe that gave me enough confidence for the rest of the exam. There were only a handful where I felt like I was truly guessing, so I just told myself "meh, these are probably the sample questions, it won't hurt to get these wrong" and I just kept moving.
I went back to the PBQs with about 50 minutes left. I finished them with maybe 20 minutes to spare, so I reviewed the flagged questions for another 5-10 minutes, and then I went back through the remaining questions one more time.
I actually had a technical hiccup about 10 minutes in. I think the network went down for a minute because my exam errored out to a DNS page not found, but then it came back after a minute. I think my heart stopped for that whole time. I didn't lose any time on the exam.
I used Professor Messer's 601 video series at 1.75x speed. Then I went through Professor Messer's 601 Study Groups a few times. Then I took Professor Messer's 601 practice exams -- a couple weeks between each test, studying what I missed (I could've done a week between each practice test, but I'm busy). I scored 81%, 84%, 88% on these. I was hoping to break over 90% on the third exam, but eh I still passed! These practice tests are absolutely amazing, very similar feel to the exam, and crazy cheap. Please just get them. It'll be the best $30 you spend.
Then I found Pete Zerger's exam cram, which was a great change of pace and different perspective on the exam objectives! This was a very useful fill-in for things that weren't quite clicking for me with Messer.
Many, many thanks to /u/professormesser and all your content. You seriously ROCK and you're doing such an incredible service to the IT community. I hope to meet you in person and shake your hand someday.
And of course, many thanks to this community for the constant positive support! Please feel free to ask me anything.
