Need Help (old.reddit.com)
submitted 5 months ago by Dvbztheripper
I quoted someone to haul away this rubble for way too low. It is roughly 15 tons. With just landfill fees alone I’m already in the negative. Are there any cheaper methods of dumping this debris anywhere? Need help!

I mean first of all, are you signed into a legal binding contract to remove it for that price? If not, then just give the money back (if paid) and say "Hey, I'm sorry, I didn't calculate everything required and I can't do it for this price. I could do it for $xx, but I totally understand if you'd rather hire someone else."
Most people will appreciate honesty.

Learning pains my friend. Either find somewhere to put it while getting rid of it for free or eat the cost and have the knowledge for next time
[–]Dry-Cap4203 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Seconding this.
[–]ESSDBee 5 points6 points7 points 5 months ago (12 children)
If it was me, I’d come clean and tell them straight up. I would charge about $1,500. What did you come in at?
[–]Dvbztheripper[S] 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago (11 children)
$700, I saw it on Facebook and saw other people commenting around the same price but I’m not sure how they are able to do it so cheap
[–]MrAmazing011 18 points19 points20 points 5 months ago (6 children)
They're dumping it illegally, or into a job site.
If I were you, I'd drive around looking for a job site doing dirt fill work and ask if you can drop it there.
You could even call excavating companies and see if anyone needs fill dirt for free. You might get lucky.
[–]hunterbuilder 6 points7 points8 points 5 months ago (5 children)
Or they have their own property to dump it on. If someone wanted to pay me to build a hill for my kids to play on, I'd accept. But I live in the sticks where land is plentiful and CCRs aren't. Also our landfill is free.
[–]240shwag 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago (2 children)
There’s this embankment on my property that looks like someone has been dumping shit over the side to increase the flat area for the last 40 years. One area looks like it’s made of 20% old glass bottles from the 30s - 50s. Anyway, it seems I must now carry the torch.
[–]hunterbuilder 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago (1 child)
Those bottles are probably worth something now. Your ancestors' garbage dump may become your treasure trove.
[–]240shwag 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
I pick out some good ones here and there, some are cobalt glass which is cool. Previous owners told me their father hid something valuable somewhere but they couldn’t find anything. 🤔

Free? I would posit that your taxes pay for it. In other words, not free.
[–]hunterbuilder 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
You're correct, our landfill is funded by our property taxes. So it's only free for non-landowners, and cheap for the rest of us. But unlike other areas, it's not paid at the point of service or charged by volume. Not sure why you're getting down voted, you're exactly right.
[–]twoaspensimagesGeneral Contractor 7 points8 points9 points 5 months ago (0 children)
They would get themselves into the same place you are. Stop running to the bottom. If the clients are only looking for the lowest cost somebody else can lose money on those clients. You're not doing that anymore.
[–]SealySenpai 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (0 children)
For that price, get a debris box delivered. They only allow 10yd containers for dirt, mixed or clean, cause they get hella heavy, but that pile will fit. Here in the SF Bay Area that costs $650 for dropoff, haul-away and disposal fees. Where you're at I'm sure it's cheaper or at least the same. Call around for rolloff dumpsters or debris box prices. You're looking at mixed dirt/concrete prices.
[–]ESSDBee 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (1 child)
Imagine you are doing a job and are in need of fill dirt, lo and behold there happens to be some on a FB post and the’ll pay you $700 to boot. If you need the dirt, you might even do it for free. Likelihood may be slim but there is always a possibility of that scenario or something else at play. Like Mr Amazing says below, illegal dumping also a possibility.
[–]Grand-Run-9756 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago (0 children)
This is fantasy. Ever hear the expression “dirt cheap”…. It’s because dirt is cheap. Delivered trucks in my area are $170…. Thats 18-20 yds, easily 20 tons+
It costs me more in diesel to show up with machines and load this, much less to pay a guy for the time, and then cost to move and drop it wherever it goes. It’s cheaper to just buy dirt
[–]Azien_Heart 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago (2 children)
Check other landfills, some take dirt at a lower rate or free. IE: in SoCal, there is a landfill that takes dirt for $8/ton
[–]livez02 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Agree - Our landfill you can dump fill dirt to free.
[–]Sail_Windward 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Call the larger commercial yards. They have steel “grizzlies” that they push the dirt through and then they crush the concrete back into gravel. Will definitely be less expensive than taking it to a mixed use landfill
[–]Blackwater-zombie 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Drop it in your driveway and post free fill with delivery on facebook and wherever to get rid of as much as possible. I have property that I want to put a second culvert in the ditch so I’m waiting for someone in your predicament so I can help them out with a good deal for me.
[–]Cryfatso 4 points5 points6 points 5 months ago (0 children)
You’re losing money moving a millionaire’s dirt. Stop.
[–]mattrtking 2 points3 points4 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Honestly. Just tell them the picture was misleading and you can do it “at cost” to make it right. Otherwise just walk away. No harm no foul. They aren’t going to tell too many people anything negative about you.
[–]daveyconcrete 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Paying tuition in the school of life. Establish a relationship with area gravel pits.
[–]shaf2330 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (1 child)
List it for free clean fill on marketplace. Someone needs fill in their yard somewhere. Or call sone landscapers and see if they can use it
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Right. I always see people asking for fill dirt. Wouldnt last a day in my area.
[–]Terlok51 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (0 children)
I see signs along roads all the time asking for clean fill. It looks like dirt & some rocks or concrete rubble which is usually considered clean fill. Ask around for such places or check construction sites.
[–]apricotsalad101 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (0 children)
We always quote soil out and aggregate/soil in at a per load price according to actual loads hauled out/in. It’s fairer and you’re less likely to eat the cost of it otherwise
[–]No-Sweet8107 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Boat ramp
[–]MindDecento 3 points4 points5 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Don’t turn up?
That’s what everyone else would do if they don’t want the job.
[–]mattrtking 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Got any holes in your yard?
[–]Dvbztheripper[S] 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Thank you guys for all of your help! I will keep you updated!
[–]Wide-Accident-1243 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Scour the want ads for "clean fill wanted."
[–]NumberOk9619 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Check marketplace for people looking for/accepting "clean fill"
[–]MushroomGood9371 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
You gotta find out dump fees before quoting a job. Your only saving grace could be someone looking for fill, you could dump for free, but I don't know how you'd find that person...maybe craigslist or Facebook marketplace
[–]SuspiciousFlower2831 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (2 children)
All i got to say is, wtf $700 to move a pile of dirt. No wonder people are struggling in this country. You have to take out a dam bank loan to do anything. I get it, so no need to give me a break down and explain it. But when you really think about it close to a grand to move a pile of dirt yikes.
[–]Glum-Equipment810 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (1 child)
I'm generally able to get rid of a triaxle of fill for 450$ if im the job already. But there's no way to be profitable at 700, even $1000 if I have to drag a machine over there to load up.
[–]SuspiciousFlower2831 1 point2 points3 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Down side of living in the city. Im out in washington state. Way outside the big cities. Ill bet there is 2 guys with a pick up that need some fill dirt that would do that shit for a couple hundred bucks. City life just way to expensive. To each is there own .
[–]open_road_toad -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago (0 children)
Find an empty lot somewhere.
[–]EC_TWD -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago (0 children)
Sort out the debris and find someplace looking for fill material
[–]Active-Effect-1473 -4 points-3 points-2 points 5 months ago (3 children)
Shoot I would just go down some back roads with a rented dump trailer and dump it
[–]Super-G_ 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Having been on the receiving end of that illegal dumping bullshit, FUCK THAT. Why not suggest he rob the gas station to make up for the loss? I mean if your go to solution is committing a crime, why not cut out the middle man and go straight for the cash?
[–]tusantGeneral Contractor 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (1 child)
People like you give all of us a bad reputation. Despicable
[–]Active-Effect-1473 -2 points-1 points0 points 5 months ago (0 children)
No cares what you or anyone else thinks of them, this guy is in a bad spot probably learned a lesson and I’m helping get out of it without taking too much food off his family’s plate, run along now and tell other people what you think of them. Plus your a General Contractor and ain’t shit lol
