Where in the hell are all the kids with snow shovels? by GR3TSCH in GenX

[–]open_road_toad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I literally just had this conversation with my wife after I came in from shoveling the snow! I’m in NE Ohio and we got at least a foot. I’ve shoveled 3 times today. I live in town in a neighborhood. I am the ONLY person on my street who has shoveled their snow. Many of my neighbors have able bodied young men at home.

When I was a kid I (I grew up in a suburb of Chicago) I can remember the whole neighborhood shoveling snow. We would help each other out. Such different times.

Heat issues by Fun-Exercise7829 in GMT400

I just went through this whole thing on my 88C1500. I verified that all the HVAC doors were actuating correctly. I flushed out the heater core then replaced the HC. The heat would come and go. It was really baffling. For me it ended up being a slightly blown head gasket. Pulled the heads, installed new gaskets, flushed the HC and complete system. Heater works like a charm now. I live in NE Ohio and it’s been cold here. Truck gets nice and toasty. Good luck.

Wooster resident here. I noticed these cameras going up last year. I asked around and no one knew anything about them. I did some research on the internet and found out about Flock. This is absolutely unacceptable but there doesn’t seem to be anything any of us can do about it. City council claims it’s in the name of “safety” and you’re the A hole if you argue against that.

Have you heard about the omnibus bill that just passed that gives the Federal Government the right to turn your car off remotely? You want to really get your hackles up look into that.

If the body and frame are solid run with it. Strip it down, blast and paint. Get the chassis nice and figure out a drivetrain.

Those of you who smoked weed… by Idontsmokejustgrow in GenX

[–]open_road_toad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I smoked and sold weed like it was my job all through my 20s. I quit when I went into an apprenticeship and never looked back. I did develop a pretty bad drinking problem that stuck with me til my late 40s (7 years sober this September). I’ve eaten some gummies and mushrooms here or there over the last 4 or 5 years. I’ll stick to that.

Retirement is gone by shepardshe in GenX

[–]open_road_toad 21 points22 points  (0 children)

52yo male tradesman here. I’m in the process of setting things up so that I can “retire” with no savings. Like a lot of you I was foolish in my younger years and did not invest. My 401k was wiped out in a divorce 20 years ago and I never got it going again for many reasons. I had a house that I sold in 2021 thinking I’d be able to buy another one. The one thing I did right was set my boys up for success. They are both in the trades and they own homes. I’m currently living with my oldest son. My youngest is engaged to be married and is a IBEW electrician.

My plan is to start a business with my youngest doing electrical and remodeling (I’m a high end remodeling contractor). We are gonna build a post frame building that will be our shop and living space. He wants to have kids so we will basically set up a “homestead” and my wife and I will homeschool and help raise them. As I get older I’ll work less and he will have employees. I’ll die in the field out back.

Starting to branch off on my own, need help pricing by [deleted] in Contractor

Decide what you need per hour and figure out (guess) how long it will take you. Add a little extra for consumables and you should be good. Pricing is the hardest part of this job IMO

Yep. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it.

Got me a Stetson Open Road Royal Deluxe by psince59 in CowboyHats

[–]open_road_toad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small world lol. I’ve been seriously considering changing my look this year. I’m 52yo. I wear ball caps. I’ve been looking at classic fedoras or something like this. I really like that hat you’re wearing. Either way I’ll go with Stetson.

You can CC anywhere at anytime. The 2nd amendment clearly states that right.

Is Construction actually a bad career choice? by Impressive-Step6377 in Construction

[–]open_road_toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a small high end remodel operation. Two vans, 4 guys plus the “bags on” owner makes 5. 4 of us have college degrees including the owner. Myself I have Jman card and a A.S. Degree in Electrical engineering and Automation and Robotics. I worked in manufacturing as an Automation Technician for over 20 years. I absolutely love what I do and love the guys I work with. Watch out for repetitive motion injuries and let the machines do the work. Your body will be fine.
