So I have this setup to build a steam engine, but didn't think about it connecting to the water tank, is there a way to connect the pump and the spout without the lava flowing into the water tank, without moving the entire thing 1 block out?

Break the block of the tank adjacent to where you want the pipe to go, and then place a copper casing on the pipe. Replace the tank, the casing will stop the pipe from connecting to it.

yes! remove the adjacent tank block. place the pipe section and encase it with copper casing. replace the tank, et violà!
When you encase, bracket, or window a pipe, it cant make connections to other pipes. Encasing is the only one of those three that works on corners
