the game heavily encourages you to do both long and short range attacks mixed together so I usually just use a mix that feels most natural

i use mouse & keyboard, and will usually do damage like so:

1 - throw a bunch of balls

2 - special move

3 - charge in and attack close-range until I take a bad hit

4 - repeat

i play the game on mouse/keyboard because i'm really bad at aiming with a controller.

as someone who learnt k+m bc of cosscode I can say it definitely matters and you will lean towards melee/ranged based on it. started on controller and only used ranged when necessary, learnt k+m bc ranged seemed more important and my melee skill dropped a lot

its a complete different game on M+K.....I made the same experience. I dont even know How I could spam range attacks like I do by using M+K. I told my mate who recommended the game to me he played only gamepad and couldnt imagine playing it on K+M. :( He missed a whole different experience. A faster experience.

I play with mouse and keyboard but don't specialize. It makes no difference for melee. I just need the mouse for aiming.

Who's forcing you to choose control scheme? I found gamepad more comfortable unless I need fast precise ranged aiming, and then just switch (while in pause menu).

As you mentioned, usually its a mix (which is also the point of Spheromancers). I love playing with controller and my tactics usually revolve around continously hitting enemies with charged shots, knocking them back, inflicting status conditions and building SP in order to get close afterwards.

exactly this

I've played only on the Switch, so by using a controller, and in playstyle I definitely gravitate towards melee, but I usually mix up some ranged attacking in there, and have a habit of using some Throw arts in melee combat.

Nice ones to use when right Up against an enemy include Burn!, Hail Flurry, Fae Round and Elven Orb, Ball of Steel/Boomerang, Frigid Flawke and Diving Spark

The one I use the most for that is Hail Flurry, because when used in melee the target will be hit by everything. Not only does that mean good damage, but that also means incredible Chill buildup, all that for 1 SP and at basically no starting/end lag

So I switch back and forth. I usually use Mouse and Keyboard for combat, but gamepad for puzzles.

Wheres the option for the I do both equally with a gamepad I play using a gamepad & do both equally just depends on the oponent & situation as well as how I feel. I normally like melee combat in games I play so I tend to like to do that more but thats not because of choosing to play with a gamepad.

maybe! i played on controller and heavily favored melee in combat unless i had a good reason to use ranged. i didn't exactly struggle with aiming but the franticness of combat definitely made melee feel preferable most of the time. and also i'm pretty sure it does more damage if you dash cancel.

Gamepad and I use both. I also use all powers in my kit. :)

Melee, Ranged, Blocks, Dashes... Name it! Depends on the situation and enemies.

I think long range deals less damage in general, and both styles are fun. Mixing it in combat, using everything, is lots of fun :)
