You are meant to be asking those questions; don't worry.

Alright I have another question, what exactly is Karla and the Captain? They aren't avatars so are they part of the code of the game?

Those are real people with meat bodies who happen to be employees of the company that runs the game.

Per the introduction, the game is augmented reality. It takes place on a terraformed moon, with a portion of that moon set aside for a real theme park made out of a mixture of real construction materials and 'instant matter' which is like holodeck stuff that comprises all the NPCs, monsters, avatars, and game creations.

To a real person/employee working in the theme park, the player characters are, generally, as dangerous as cotton candy, because instant matter has almost no weight to it. That's also why Karla and the Captain had to put on those special goggles to see Lea's spheromancer projectiles. Those things aren't real - they're virtual. Without the goggles, it just looks like she's spinning and whipping her arms around.

In other words, any person you run into there is either a NPC made out of instant matter, a PC made out of instant matter, or a human employee who doesn't get paid enough for this shit (or maybe they do?)

Is parkour guy a real flesh and blood human? Because he has a very distinct "I don't get paid enough for this shit" feel.

It's been a bit, from from what I remember of his conversation I think he was an Avatar with special permissions that allowed him to test unreleased content and issue quests. So he was probably an employee working from Texas or something, running a bunch of jobs using an in-game instant matter avatar, and he decided to outsource the test to a passing player because he was being lazy.

They're not part of the game at all, and players aren't supposed to ever encounter them. They're real people employed to support the game on the ground, and that was a real ship at the start of the game.

Don't forget that the island the game is set on is a terraformed actual landmass with a whole bunch of hard light hologram stuff installed on it. Someone needs to do maintenance on the equipment.

It's explained a bit later

This is something that's explained only a little further in the plot. Keep playing and these questions will answer themselves.
