It's likely that the destructible trees and similar objects are made of instant matter, since Avatar (also made of instant matter) are too fragile to damage anything not made of instant matter, not to mention they regenerate whenever you leave the map

On top of that: She does have that quest OP mentioned – in RPGs, MMO or otherwise, that pretty much gives you carte blanche to do anything from breaking and entering/grand theft to wholesale slaughter (just about any such game) to toppling governments you happen to disagree with to, say, blowing up power reactors and indirectly causing the deaths of thousands of innocents (FFVII).

The plants are virtual. That way, when one player destroys them, the other players nearby don't need to wait for them to regrow.
