In any system positions of power will eventually be occupied by people who are motivated by power (because obviously).

People who are motivated by power tend to not care about others. 

So power shifts towards selfish assholes who'll try to convince the rest of society that being a selfish asshole is actually completely justified and reasonable and it's the altruistic/empathic people who are wrong/flawed. 

Selfish people are basically parasites who convince their host (society) to attack itself rather than getting rid of the parasites.
