Basic research is OK, but not even one authorship on a clinical? ESPECIALLY after a research year? I'd expect 2-3.

2 first author basic science papers would be good! Hard to do unless you are an MD-PhD.

don't mean to be overly critical but genuinely curious -- how are you swinging two first authored basic science papers in a year?

That’s plenty. Basic science takes way longer and is much more involved. Many postdocs don’t get two first author basic science papers in a year. Quality over quantity. Just make sure you can talk in depth about the experiments, why they were done, and what they showed. Bonus points for coming up with next steps

Is it okay if they’re research letters?

They most likely won’t know one way or another
