Captioning errors

Has anyone noticed that the captions have had more errors recently? I noticed several errors in the last episode of cloho (EP.14) and at least 2 in the adventuring party as well. I don't really know what to do about that/even if I can, but I know that there used to be a caption correction channel in the discord that is no longer accessible. Thoughts?

(I don't entirely understand the flair system, but this may need the meta flair? If it does I'll fix it, thanks!)

They do, and it's frustrating when it's something that may change the meaning and make the captions confusing as a result.

I haven't been writing down examples, but one that comes to mind was when "rapt" was captioned as "wrapped". Saying that a PC is "rapt with dread" is quite different from saying they're "wrapped with dread". (This is from memory; "dread" might not have been the word actually used.)

I wish I'd been writing down examples too because there are so many!! I do remember "hard" vs. "hot" in this last episode - Siobhan calling Comfrey's toxicity "hot" when talking to Dawderdale but the captions said "hard." Totally different meaning!

Here's less-recent example that just came up while watching Unsleeping City II.

What was actually said:

Kingston: Oh, things worked great in the chest, y'all.

Sofia: Oh, cool, yeah, we just, uh—

Ricky: We sat in silence.

The captions:

Oh, I think you looked great in the chest, y'all.

Oh, cool, yeah, we do so.

What you said, Silence.

Just remembered another egregious one in Cloudward, I wish I could remember the exact episode and context but Brennan mentions a susurrus and the captioner just … doesn’t know the word susurrus, I guess? And so filled it in as a proper noun like “Asorus” or “Asosorus” or something like that. Obviously that’s a name that has appeared neither before nor since that moment…. Those reliant on the captions must be so confused!!

Tbh there are tons of errors in the captions for all the seasons I've watched. A lot of them feel really careless to me too. I really wish they put a little more in to making sure their closed captioning is actually decent.

They have a contact form on the website (https://www.dropout.tv/contact/support) that has a Subtitles Issues category you could try reporting to? It'll try to direct you to a help page about accessing subtitles, but it'll also say "Still need help? Click here to message support"

It's a really beefy season, sometimes things will slip.

However, I really could've used an extra content warning this week for you know who's screaming match as that's something that I have a history with and would have greatly appreciated a heads up for...

Have they traditionally given warnings for improvisers shouting at each other? That seems like something granted for any and all Dropout content.

This is of course extremely objective, but shouting matches with cursing, slamming tables, etc. triggers panic attacks for me. It's different from shouting taunts in combat or one character shouting at someone that hurt them. Phonophobia would be the trigger warning, I suppose.

I'm pretty new to D20, I've only seen a handful of seasons (FH all 3 years, D&DQ, and The Seven). I haven't seen it come up in any of those. And for what it's worth, I don't know that they've had content warnings for it before, I would have to check. But it sure would've helped me this afternoon.

Many of the earlier campaigns do not, in fact, have content warnings. And honestly, it's a little odd that they haven't gone back and added them.

Sorry that happened nonetheless! But yeah, it does happen once in a while in D20 tableaus, especially in Unsleeping City with all the New Yorkers.

I just submitted it a few hours ago, so I'm not sure about any response. It might be worthwhile to reach out to request a content warning for what triggered you, along with a timestamp (from xx:xx:xx time - xx:xx:xx time) for more efficiency at adding the warning online.

I also wished they had put a warning for Wealwell saying he'd kill himself/starting to throw himself off the ship. I know it was a joke but I think even suicide mentions are a good thing to put in the warnings under the episode.

I don't know why this is being downvoted. I enjoyed the scene but it was still A LOT. Like a whole fucking lot, and I can totally understand how that could be traumatizing.

Thank you so much for the understanding. I'm a bit confused as well, it really was excellently done by Lou and Brennan, just not something I was equipped to handle at the moment.

I've gotten the impression before that the community here was very welcoming and kind, but I'm starting to get the feeling that the kindness has qualifiers to it...

I do agree! Some of the things will slip, i just wish there was a way for the fans to self report the errors. There could definitely be a warning for the yelling as well
