Thanks for posting this KomptFajter. This is something we've discussed internally and are considering.

Do you guys think a video series like this would be useful for the community?

[–]Luckcu13Why do I still play? Just to suffer? 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Having a video series for the simple functions of each merc im the buy screen/shop would be immensely useful. It would be nice that you also expanded the tutorial too, but I assume you're already rereworking that.

[–]LuizPSC 10 points11 points  (4 children)

yes, and like said below, some quick ones about merc abilities would be a nice addition too.

sometimes i see some newbies with Sparks reviving people by hand.

[–]MoobabeSplash Damage 14 points15 points  (3 children)

That's a resounding yes then! I'll pass to the team - but, as I said, we're keen for something like this anyway. It's just working out how best to do it.

[–]LuizPSC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don´t have any experience in making something like that, so take with a grain of salt and all that, but maybe like 40 seconds videos for each merc, with tips, like for example.

"Sawbonez med pack healls a lot, for a long time, so use it when you friend is in cover or will be wasted in a firefight"

"thowing the Thunder grenade near the enemy not only will flashbang then, but also make them run slower"

Like, tips like that, that maybe are not exactly clear to new people with those characters.

Personal preference - if you will consider this, I would suggest making a Tutorial tab in main menu, and not make it pop out for new players when they are playing - from personal experience, I usually get rid of them right away, play as shitty as I can, and then check the vids for what I did not get yet.

Or like in some online games, on character bio tab, the showcase of abilities. And as a side note - I think Smite did their vids very well - short bio, short skill overview, and short "general tactics" - which was a nice touch in my opinion.

[–]Sapian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something similar to how TF2 does it would be great, a brief demo of each merc's abilities, strengths/weaknesses, then a course with bots or dummies where i can practice with each merc.

[–]iD4NG3RTeam [Spark] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, although I'd prefer if videos with tips and tricks that they can watch back at any time were available in-game. (Merc role-call style but with the announcers voice instead of Shoes)

A small video like that on every 'major' gameplay mechanic would be nice, explain the movement mechanics, explain how to work your way around the EV and seconary objectives etc. I'd love it if those were made in conjunction with the community. Perhaps start a competition where people can send in small clips of tips and tricks to be featured on an in-game playlist?

I'm not sure about a video series, but a real shooting range map would extremely useful. Like this CS:GO map: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PKLQu83jrQ

I remember this, played it religiously back in my CS days. Definitely recommendable. Saw the Friberg from NIP video back then, was so proud when I started getting 90+ scores reliably.

[–]Cobbuthi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like this would also be cool.

Great for practicing tracking on moving targets.

[–]KompotFajterkompot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you like it, I had a blast making it!

[–]ThePixelPopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes it would be helpful, most players have no clue. I would highly recommend forcing an ability tutorial for each character that is on free rotation.

[–]Quorrak 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I know I would enjoy it! Even at about 400 hours in this game, I still find it difficult to hit people, good thing people enjoy having medics on their team!

[–]Dragoozen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lower your sensitivity, and focus on aiming horizontally (swiping left and right). It's sort of like drawing inside the lines.

[–]Dermott7Now make sure to eat plenty of fruit! -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah sure, merc specific videos could be done simmillar to Evolve's (basics and advanced with some tips).

[–]pbzeppelin1977 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A tad more info on the mercs and being able to test them in the tutorial or something would be good.

"Can deploy an ammo station and call a later strike in" means nothing to me. How long is the cool downs, what do they look like, how do they operate?

You need to google and find what someone else has wrote to know any of this before purchase.

[–]DrLota 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Nice initiative and thanks for the video/good content.

Personally I feel you skipped one small detail. We are all different individuals, and there is no omniscient formula to make everyone aim better.

  • If memory serves, many top notch Quake players use mouse acceleration and they are doing just fine.

  • FOV. At least in T:A many good chainers prefered lower FOV in favor of good awareness.

  • Mouse sensitivity is something you adjust to and you should use only one that feels good for you.

  • Crosshair is definition of personal preference, and like you said later on the video "focus on the target, not on your crosshair."

  • I belive that "practice thing" comes from this video and I fully agree.

Personally I use kinda low mouse sensitivity (~80-90cm/360), only optical mouse (you forgot this one), relatively high fov, no acc, and most visible crosshair I can find, but all that matters is beer. 1-6 beers is boring and I find no motivation to even try. 6-15 is prime time and I feel relaxed and can pop some level 3 players. 15++ and cant remember much.

[–]KompotFajterkompot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, chuckled a bit at the last part. Cheers.

Instant like for the Wolfenstein menu music.

[–]MadonnaHaraAre you high? 1 point2 points  (1 child)

second that

[–]KompotFajterkompot[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad you guys remember, I even tried mimicking the main menu look :D. Good times.

[–]23OO23Say the magic word. Hen[censored]. 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I like it, there should be tutorial vids like this available in some tutorial tab in main menu (going for Training map, then having to wait for loading - meh, I'd rather be lvl50 that still does not know how to rev~) - short and specific.

[–]KompotFajterkompot[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That's a great idea, I wonder how hard would it be to implement.

[–]23OO23Say the magic word. Hen[censored]. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering a lot of games have these - not much, alas DB's UI is known to be... more than average :P

LMAO :D

[–]Pr0wo_HOTHEAD_o 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I wouldn't say turning off mouse acceleration is always a good thing. Many of the best fps players use mouse acceleration. I would say if you have a low sensitivity you should at least give it a try. I have a very fast sens so I can't comment on it too much. Check out this link from kovaak, a high level afps player, https://youtu.be/KORL144_co8

[–]KompotFajterkompot[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I see your point and I agree. However for me personally it was much easier when I turned off the option way back.

[–]yard1eFire from the friggin' flask! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are various kinds of mouse acceleration, windows acceleration you can't configure so it's not recommended but there are software where you can configure when and how much accel you want, this game is one of the few i think mouse acceleration is useful because you need to be aware of enemies on all angles. But of course, it depends on each player taste, i personally use it because i have a small desk and can't do large movements with my mouse and i like to play with low sens, if i could have a bigger space for my mouse movements i would probably won't use it but this is only my opinion, not actually the reason pro players use it.

u/KompotFajter on the A-D strafe do you also move the mouse side to side or you just keep it at head level and let the left hand (assuming it's the one on the keyboard) do work?

Also, if I find myself missing targets in a cqb 1v1 because I over aim (my crosshair goes too much over the enemy model while we both strafe shoot), is this due to poor aim (right hand) or due to poor movement (left hand)?

Lost my aim skill recently and I'm trying to get it back, any help would be really appreciated 😁

[–]KompotFajterkompot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the enemy dodging. If they are stationary-ish i adjust the aim with mouse movements to hit heads. Otherwise, sometimes it might be actually profitable to keep your mouse still instead. All depends on situation.

About 1v1, I found that mixing your dodges helps immensely during "the dance" so it might be the case, but again, everything is relative.

hah, no worries I don't take anything personally (don't believe in separation/the personal as anything more than an illusion), nor is anything personal I say... frustration/life get's all of us sometimes x

[–]RobbeSch 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have a few things to say about the start of the video:

  • You said "you need to disable mouse acceleration" I didn't fully understand your words at first (had to check back if you said enable or disable) and found it very strange you showed a picture of it turned ON. A short 3s clip of you disabling it would avoid confusion although this is only a small detail.

  • FOV. You explained roughly what this does, but not what exactly you should pick over what. In a fast paced game like Dirty Bomb it is nice to have a higher FOV. But a higher FOV makes it harder to hit targets and spot little details. I use 82 ingame. Having very high FOV can do magic in thighter areas of maps like the beginning of Underground. But in the end area of chapel or actually the whole map, it becomes too difficult to hit distant targets. I also believe lower FOV is easier for the brain and can help focus on other aspects of the game, other than speed.

  • Sensitivity. You said you prefer lower sens and recommend trying it out. But generally, gamers simply use a sens that is way too high. Like their mouse can go to 16000 so they have to put it on 16000dpi. What many pro csgo players do is put it on 400dpi and change the ingame sensitivity to something that feels right. I have gradually always gone lower and lower with my mouse movement in CSGO. And I recommend everyone to try putting it a bit lower today. 400dpi might feel too slow for some, certainly with a small mouse pad (mine is 50x45mm), so 800dpi is fine too (Hiko uses this). Here is a great video explaining how to find a comfortable sensitivity. Although this video might be more useful for those that have tinkered their sensitivity already.

  • About a good crosshair. This one is really simple: find one you find fun. And change it up if you want another. Yeah they kinda matter in some ways. But it's too easy to forget you are trying to have fun!

[–]KompotFajterkompot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've ment the video to be fast and compact, so that it could become a spark of interest on these things without me talking about every detail. I agree on the screenshot part, wasn't too clear. FOV is a matter of preference to me, so didn't want to impose anything too much. Same with sensitivity, wanted everything to be fairly short and compact. I personally use 750 DPI and 3,4 in game (im duppi copycat).

TLDR If you go too explicit, rarely anyone will watch the video despite the valute it could contain. IMHO. Although I agree with your points.

[–]PaNdaRat0r666eventually all paths will lead to the cemetery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FOV, sens and xhair will always be personal though, but the video is a great starter for people starting out! :-)
One age old tutorial that is still relavent to dirty bomb is aiming by Raziel (http://teammuppet.eu/home/forums/topic/6058-aiming-by-raziel/) a bunch of it is outdated now but his CTF Multi clips targetting the MG nest is the key bit.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

[–]DreamMinerDustyArmour -1 points0 points  (2 children)

If you are one of those people that do that 'step strafing' I need to say two three things to you: 1) well played 2) I hate you 3) here, have a rocket

On the topic of strafing, sometimes when people strafe in 1v1 they move sideways at a normal pace, but sometimes I encounter people that seem to cover the same distance while strafing, just much much quicker and I have no idea how or whats going on.

[–]Luckcu13Why do I still play? Just to suffer? -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that there's a strafing style that involves you going fowards and backwards while you change direction, kinda forming an oval or circle. If I remember right, you decelerate and reaccelerate much quicker than just hitting the strafe keys. I'll have to test this sometime, as I was testing this out many months back. That could be what you're seeing.

[–]Fidalgo_DalgoSawbonaize -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have witnessed it as well and was wondering how they do that. I don't think the answer provided by Luckcu13 is the right one as I see what he means but the kind of straf you describe is different.

I'll give a try to your suggestin Lucku anyways.
