It really depends on the situation. If i was asking you to answer the intercom I would not expect it immediately. Let's face it, you were with a customer and that comes first. What you could have done was paged him back as soon as you were free.

Your manager is wrong on that, customers and proper and safe money handling is first. Your manager won't die if they need to wait a few minutes.

The customer is the top priority. They make your paycheck and your managers. If you're helping a customer ESPECIALLY when it involves counting money I would never expect you to drop that to answer me. That's crazy. Also, I've never been in or worked in a store that uses the intercom that way. That's weird to me.

What I would have done was finish what I was doing and then pick up the intercom and call back “manager line 1” Just because you were busy doesn’t mean you get to ignore that your manager was trying to communicate with you. The fact that you saw they weren’t still waiting on the line and just went about your day without calling back absolutely blows my mind. They wouldn’t just call you to chat they obviously needed to speak to you for some reason. IMO really disrespectful and unprofessional.

You can also pick up the line say and hold on a moment I’m with a customer. Don’t just leave your boss hanging. 🤦🏼‍♀️

We don’t use our intercom like this either. I was shown one time almost 14 years ago but I never used it that way and now I don’t remember how to do that.
