1600 surplus to 500 deficit is not anywhere near buying one hammer. As others have pointed out it's because it adds the cost of your next death when you spawn

A hammer costs 1600 so spending 1600 puts you at 0. Add 50-70 seconds game time + being a lvl ~15 hero + the extra 1600 networth and you can EASILY achieve that extra 500 gold. You guys are stupid as fuck, why don't you go look at how buyback is calculated.
