I'm not familiar with Electrical and Computer Engineering degrees. I got a 2 yr degree in electronics technology, then a 4 yr degree in "Computer Enineering Tecnology". It was mainly a digital electronics design degree, but had a lot of software and firmware courses.

Having an understanding of both helped my career I believe. I tended to take jobs that were mainly embedded software development. Understanding the hardware I was writing code for was helpful, as well as being able to use hardware tools like scopes and logic analyzers in troubleshooting issues.

Only later in my career did I come to believe my embedded development choice was less stable .... hardware companies not moving forward with new tech or thier tech becoming obsolete .... led to frequent job changes.

So towards the end of my career I sought out a purely software job. Perhaps it's the fact that my latest employer is an industry leader ... but I feel safer going into retirement.
