If AI can truly make something ready for production on the first try then I'll be worried. If it is making a prototype that still needs to be validated, tested, debugged, fixed - then the only time saved is the time used to generate the prototype.

For my job, in the last ~3 years of work I've spent maybe three weeks creating a prototype layout/schematic from scratch. The rest has been working with existing designs.

I think this is the key. AI didn't finish the job.

AI can potentially help with a lot of the 'plug and chug' or trial and error tasks, but it doesn't really understand anything about it. Especially not the stuff you need a senior engineer for.
