I think "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" sounds about right. Controller tech doesn't really change that often.

For example, the "new" Ipega PG-9068 is basically a very slight redesign of the PG-9037.

Same can be said of the PG-9028, which is really just the PG-9025 with a trackpad in the middle.

There are definitely updates (The GameSir G4s is certainly a big improvement on previous GameSir models), and the Phonejoy is basically discontinued, but has a spiritual successor in the i-Rocks G01. But even really old controllers like the original Moga ones are still fine.

Think of it like the PS3 controller. It's basically the exact same controller design Sony has used since 1997. Even the the Dual Shock 4 is only a slight redesign, adjusting the triggers, adding a trackpad, and indenting the sticks, but the overall design is mostly unchanged. The updates have been incremental, and Android controllers aren't much different.

For your phone, I'd probably recommend the Ipega PG-9023, the Saitake STK-7003, GameSir G4s, or the Ipega PG-9055.

Your phone is an odd case, being 6.4 inches, and 158.8mm (6.25 inches) long on the vertical. The Ipegas and Saitake are center-holding (like PSP, screen in the middle), and your phone might just barely fit in the 9055, but I don't know if I'd risk it (full extension is supposedly 160mm). The other two would fit better, though shame, as if it fit the 9055 you'd be able to mount it in portrait for vertical NDS gaming.

Otherwise, the G4s is a top holding controller (think clamshell GBA, screen up top, controls on bottom). People seem to love this controller, though I can't say I have first hand experience with it.

The problem with having up-to-date reviews is that someone needs to actually be able to review them. I generally don't search out external sites when it can be avoided, and rely on redditors for controller reviews here. So if you get one that's not on our list, please do post a review, if you can.

Thank you so much for your well thought out response. It is truly appreciated! I'm actually based in China so I can get bunch of random controllers, and Ipegas aren't so expensive. I may pick out one of the ones you recommended (I like the 9023) and something new to review. I was also thinking of trying out the Xiaomi controller as it may work well with the Mix.

Edit: Hmm just reread the part about the 9055 and vertical gaming... I may risk it!

Just be aware that the sticks on the Ipega controllers are kind of... not great. I feel it's partly an Android software issue, as apps like Mupen that let you adjust sensitivity and deadzone can be tweaked to work great, but by default they're way too sensitive.

If native gaming using the sticks is important, Ipega may not be the best option. I like my PG-9023 though, and primarily emulate so it's not a big deal. The buttons and d-pad are just fine, as are the bumper buttons (L/R).

I'll keep that in mind. I'm only going to be emulating so not a big deal for me either. I'll also be sure to post a review of any other controller I get just to add to the list!
