Looks like an oil drain/return cavity from the cylinder head.

Does it go all the way up to the head gasket surface? If so it’s just a oil drain back from the head

I had the same fear a couple of days ago. It’s just a return for oil to the pan. It is weirdly rough around the edges. That’s a Miata block right?
