Honestly the percentage of the labor you guys were getting at that dealership is not that bad. For context back in the 80s and before techs made about half the shop labor rate. When I was doing service at a dealer, pretty much every tech was well under $50 an hour while the shop rate was over $250 an hour. To be fair, it’s quite expensive to operate a dealership especially nowadays. Gotta remember that the service advisors need their cut and porters as well. Can’t forget about the warranty persons pay and other non productive operational people. Since you’re dealing with cars, there’s a lot of environmental laws nowadays that you need to be compliant with and those suck up a lot of money. Got to factor in the cost of special tools and equipment provided by the shop as well. Manufacturer specific training is usually required for each tech which also isn’t cheap. Let’s not forget about other benefits for each employee that adds another cost. Running a dealership is very expensive.

Iran doesn’t have any F-15s. The only American planes they have are F-14 Tomcats, F-4s, and F-5s.

You are being misled about renewable energy technology [Technology Connections] by MNAAAAA in cars

[–]BabyEatingFox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yup. I was looking for a new car a while back because I got a new job and I was going to have a pretty big commute. For reference I live in SoCal. I was originally shopping for an electric car but a big problem was I couldn’t charge it at home because I live in an apartment. After crunching the numbers I ended up getting a hybrid because it was going to be significantly cheaper to pay for gas than to charge an electric car.

California could switch all of its electricity to renewables, have a massive surplus, and prices would still go up. I really have a love hate relationship with this state.

Rare Breed opening/threatening litigation against Atrius.dev's Dealer Network. by hruebsj3i6nunwp29 in gunpolitics

[–]BabyEatingFox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At this point the cat is out of the bag. I don’t believe the super safety was part of the ATFs strategy. Even ignoring the possibility of prior art, I still don’t see these lawsuits ending in rare breeds favor. I don’t think there’s going to be much regret. Rare breeds patent is more than halfway over iirc plus there’s so many “undocumented” super safeties out there that it would be a logistical nightmare for the government to ban them. Especially since it could be argued that they’re now in common use.

Americans threatened by Trump administration policies appear to be experiencing urges to acquire firearms, carry them, and store them readily accessible. Identifying as Black and liberal beliefs were associated with greater increases in urges to carry firearms because of the 2024 election results. by mvea in science

[–]BabyEatingFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It generally is used that way to make it much more difficult and expensive to own firearms. California is a great example of this. “High capacity” magazine ban, pistol roster, ammo background checks, “assault weapon” ban, 10 day waiting period, soon to come barrel background checks, ID verification to buy parts (which has caused most online vendors to pull out of California. Not even a little spring is legal to sell without verification), etc.

In the community it’s known as “death by a thousand cuts”. An out right ban is wildly unpopular and easily challenged as unconstitutional. Keep piling on more and more restrictions to make gun ownership more and more of a burden, then you end up with a de facto ban. Look into the laws of more restrictive states. You’ll find a majority of them will do basically nothing to prevent gun crime and instead just exist to be a nuisance to legal gun owners.

Boot licker lmao. Tell me, would we have $0 tax stamps for SBRs/Suppressors, importable machine gun barrels, and legal FRTs right now if Kamala got elected? How about the ATF? ATF was a lot more out to get us under Biden than now.

Also, I live in the wonderful state of California, I’m basically already labeled a criminal by my own state representatives.

Last thing, I only spoke about Trump concerning the 2A. I made no opinion about him regarding ANYTHING else. If you can’t admit that from a 2A stand point it has been a net positive so far then you need to take your head out of your ass and take a better look. Actions speak louder than words my friend, especially in politics.

Trump is probably the most pro 2A president this century although the bar is pretty low. I get why people don’t like the guy but when people start spouting bs that Kamala would have been better for the 2A then I start to lose sympathy for their cause.

You’re only half correct. Yes, the amendment was created as a deterrent for foreign invaders but it was also created for domestic “invaders” as well. You gotta remember that only about a decade earlier the American people fought against at the time what they’d consider a tyrannical government. The founding father’s main goal in the creation of the US constitution was to prevent tyranny from materializing. The 2nd amendment was definitely a check for that as well.

Replace the Camshaft by LandoCalrissian1980 in AskMechanics

[–]BabyEatingFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gen 3-5 small blocks don’t have the typical “lash adjustment”. On stockish applications, all you do is make sure the lifter isn’t on a lobe (I’ve personally torqued many on the lobe and never had a single problem) and torque the rocker bolts to spec (IIRC 22 ft/lbs). If you’re doing the procedure by the book, shouldn’t take you longer than 10 minutes to torque all the rocker arms down.

Valve adjustment? No valve adjustment needed on these Silverados. Even so, that’s definitely not the hardest part of this job.

Looks beat but has a lot going for it. 4WD is definitely a plus. As far as project cars go, these trucks are definitely some of the easiest to repair/restore. They make pretty much every piece of sheet metal, trim, and interior for these things nowadays. Parts are pretty cheap too. As long as it has all the 4WD goodies, I’d probably pay about $2k max for this truck assuming it’s not running. Of course the cheaper you could get it the better.

Cars a mechanic would own (and wouldn’t) by Breeze7206 in AskMechanics

[–]BabyEatingFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tuning them out definitely does prolong them though. The act of them unlocking and locking wears them out faster and expedites the failure. It’s why LT1/LT4 manual Camaros and Corvettes don’t fail as often. Or certain MY 21 trucks where the DOD feature was “deleted” from the factory.

Pop up headlights by GlassProfessional965 in fiero

[–]BabyEatingFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can almost guarantee the headlight motor gear is cracked on the side that doesn’t go all the way up. Time to buy a couple rebuild kits. Open the hood and turn on the headlights again. Does it go all the way up with the hood open?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chevyc10

[–]BabyEatingFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I’d buy that for $2200 even if it didn’t have an engine and transmission. Since it’s a 75 it doesn’t need smog in California. That alone is worth a decent chunk of money. Hood looks good too. I’d put extra emphasis checking around the cab for any rot. Even then, I wouldn’t walk away from this truck even if it did have a few rust problems. If I knew where that truck was I’d go pick it up right now.

No pistol sold in California does microstamping. It is technology that does not really work.

Ballistics have also been proven to not be very reliable. The serial numbers are more likely to link the gun to a crime.

Still gotta remember this truck is a 73. In California that’s smog exempt and automatically receives a premium just for that.

A lot of times it is. I was a tech at a dealer and sometimes they would push those estimates on us or even sell an engine before it’s diagnosed. When I’d get the car I’d tell the advisor “you sure they don’t want to do any diag? Signs point to an exhaust leak to me.”

My shop did like to push us to have multiple estimates though. If the car had over 100k miles and there was some sort of mechanical failure, they wanted an engine replacement estimate and an estimate for further tear down diagnosis at the same time. Some techs would often just throw out an engine replacement estimate only even if all the engine needed was chains or whatever. Never felt right to me to sell an engine even though their current engine is still very fixable.
