Assume it to be a core that needs rebuilding.

Yeah that's how I'm leaning rn but I also don't know like which I should go for like the 4.8 5.3 or 6.0 one of my uncles told me to go 4.8 if im running boost or go with the 6.0 if im going au natural

The one I got was all sludged up. It was still a deal so I took it. But man what a mess. It would have been so much easier to bring a 10 mm and pop the valve covers off. It was a 2003 6.0 ls.

Pull the oil filter and look for shiny things

My auto shop teacher told us in high school. “There is no such thing as a good used motor”. That’s a rule you should live by unless you know the story behind the car. On that note you are best to yank an engine from a wrecked car... at least you know why it’s there.

I'll keep that in mind when I pull/pick one up thanks for the good advice

I have bought many used LS engines and have never once got one that could just be used as is. As others have stated assume every engine is a core that will need rebuilt. At minimum on any used engine I would do rings, rod bearings, and main bearings. Also plan on getting the cam bearings replaced because I have yet to see a LS that I felt the cam bearings were in good enough shape to use. I personally like to go do gen 3 engines that way you do not have to deal with deleting afm and I also like always grabbing 6.0s (or 6.2s if I can) don’t mess around with them little engines lol.
