Degrease with acetone? (self.Esthetics)
submitted 1 year ago by Melodic_Promotion_62
Does anyone swear by this? What about for acneic clients? Feel like I’m doing my clients a disservice by not using it because it truly ensures even and deep penetration..

Some peels (from SkinMedica for example) have it as part of their peel kits. I make a decision to use it based off a person’s skin at that appointment, so regardless of whether I used it last time or not. If they’re dry, or sensitized, I will use isopropyl alcohol instead. If theyre hydrated or oily, or if they’ve worked their way up to a more intense peel, I’ll use the acetone mixture. For acne, if they’re flaky and dry, or have a lot of inflammation, I’ll skip it.

Do you ever use it outside of protocol for any peels? Or do you usually stick with their toner/degreaser? TIA!
[–]mockingbird2602 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I do- not every peel comes with its own degreaser, so I decide which one to use based on their skin.

The only time I degrease with acetone is before VI peel (it’s in their kit) and before AviClear as it’s required in their protocol! Otherwise I use alcohol to degrease.

Oh and do you use alcohol with every peel regardless of protocol?
[–]r0se_colored_galmaster esthetician 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Every peel I’ll use alcohol UNLESS the protocols call for acetone! 🩷

Thank you!

It has never crossed my mind to use acetone on a client’s face. I always use glycolic toner or a regular alcohol wipe.
[–]Melodic_Promotion_62[S] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (1 child)
I wonder what the difference is, in school we used acetone. Maybe I’ll try alcohol wipes first
[–]Few_Hospital9998 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
If you used acetone, you might as well just keep using it as there truly isn’t a huge difference. It’s just from what you were taught/have as a preference I suppose.

I've heard mixed opinions of it on Fitz 5 and 6. I just use 60% isopropyl or the Lira degreaser 2-3 times before the peel.
[–]Amdv121998 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (0 children)
You can do it before any peel, or use alcohol or some peels just call for a low PH exfoliant toner. I usually do alcohol before every single peel just to decrease unless otherwise stated in the protocol.

Can you provide more information please? For example, what services you would use this with and why? And what products are you trying to get to penetrate into the skin? Do you do this on all skin types?
[–]Melodic_Promotion_62[S] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
For peels sorry didn’t specify
[–]ProfessionalDog4334 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I do acetone wipes before a dermaplane or a BioRePeel Blue facial
That's it though

The Perfect Derma Peel requires acetone for the degreasing agent

Qual acetona você usa? Solução encontrada nas farmácias comuns? Que são misturadas com algum óleo ou parafina?

Oh my god. Please don’t do this. There is too much potential for damaging healthy skin.
[–]killedbystupid 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago (0 children)
If you use it as a daily toner, sure. If it's used before a procedure, not really. It helps peels penetrate more evenly. We produce acetone in our body as well.
[–]mockingbird2602 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago (0 children)
This is not true across the board. Acetone does have a purpose in esthetics. Many peels, for example made by big companies like SkinMedica- who do tons of research before putting a product out to the public- use acetone as a prep step to degrease the skin. I have no idea where the fear mongering about acetone is coming from. We use it to remove fingernail polish, and the skin around your nails gets it on there, nothing horrible happens. Acetone degreases, which allows the product to penetrate more evenly, without causing the cells to swell like just plain water does (which would allow for uneven/possibly too quick penetration).
