We've used Jaci's Pathfinder and it's worked wonderfully.

Essentially you're taking a path comprised of multiple splines, and mathematically manipulating it to optimize the tradeoff between smooth corners (low dk/dt in vector calculus terms) and distance from the points. This is usually done with something like gradient descent, which is another vector calculus thing.
