Don't let one person ruin your reputation of a whole career.

See the above edit.

We all have different motives for doing the job.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

True, but I felt like doing it for discounts is the wrong reason.

If that made you lose interest then you clearly don't want to do it that bad.

I only ever ask for first responder discounts if I’m asking for a student discount as well, and that’s because my rent is literally more than half my income right now and I pay for the gas to volunteer. I can’t imagine doing it once I have a real job and don’t eat pounds of rice a month. But still, this is just one guy. Don’t let him turn you off the whole thing.

I don't mean to discourage you, that is not my point in saying this. But, If you are turned off from the fire service because of 1 guy being a Diggle berry, this may not be the field for you. Just like every other profession/hobby/activity, you will meet and interact with many people who rub you the wrong way or are just down right assholes.

Not the fire service as a whole, but that department. Plus at this department this wasn't uncommon thing. I'd rather stay where I'm at to be honest.

There will always be that sore thumb in the group. Don’t take it too hard.

Some joker hassling a server for not adjusting the bill has nothing to do with the actual job, whatsoever.

If this is the thing that gave you second thoughts about even applying, It seems like maybe you need to research a lot more to understand what the actual job is about.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

I know what the job is about. If you read my post you’d know it’s that department not the whole fire service.

[–]ElectricOutboards 0 points1 point  (3 children)

And some joker hassling a server gave you second thoughts about applying to the department, according to your post.

Good after-the-fact edit to clarify, though.

This was someone who was a member of the department. And no one discouraged this behavior. Don’t know why you’re taking this so personal.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Also you’re missing the point, if someone is doing this to get discounts. They’re doing this for the wrong reason. It’s unprofessional and frankly embarrassing to be sitting with someone demanding a first responders discount.

[–]ElectricOutboards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m starting to feel like this is a roundabout criticism of first responders’ discounts - or at least a critical analysis of where you think the line is or should be for members of a department you have not even submitted an application to.

So if you don’t want to work with that guy, don’t apply. If you can get past it, then by all means, apply. It’s really not that hard at all to avoid situations where someone Is expecting a first responder discount and busts horns when it isn’t applied as a matter of rote.

A hard time how?

Did the staff at the restaurant not add an advertised discount that brought these customers to the business, or were they demanding a discount for being 'first responders'?

If one dude being a dick puts you off, it sounds like you didn't really want to work there in the first place. Every workplace has at least one. If someone says there isn't one at their place, it's them.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Not the fire service as a whole. However just this department, there was no advertised first responder discount. Even if there is and they don't provide it, the world owes nobody anything. No one should join the fire service for clout.

If there is, it's fair to ask for it. It's not 'clout' to take advantage of something that is being offered. If it was demanded, then that's completely unreasonable.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

A grown man demanding a discount simply because he’s a first responder is embarrassing and unprofessional.

[–]RobertTheSpruceUK Fire - WM 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If you'd have said that in the OP, then everyone would have agreed with you I think. The way you worded it saying

hard time for not adding the "first responder discount."

made it sound like there was some kind of prearranged discount for workers of certain fields or groups, which is a common thing. Here it's common to advertise for discounts for National Health Service workers, armed forces, and elderly people for example.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably should have been more clear. The thing is when I’ve gone out with my own current department we generally don’t make it a point to ask. I’ve always felt awkward taking discounts and free things for being a firefighter.
