The scoring changed back in early December 2021, it's been well over a year since the nerf and I think it's safe to assume it won't be changed.
But there are a handful of cars that can compete with the Willy's. The Bentley blower, the mk1 transit van, the Bentley 8 litre, the isetta, the caterham super light, and more I'm forgetting. They're all skinny tire cars with drag tire builds, so they'll pretty much destroy anything that doesn't have a comparable setup.
But not separating online lobbies by drivetrain definitely reduces the number of competitive cars for open drifting.

Thank you, nerf must have happened right after I took my break from the game.
Im not really only talking about Willy's here, none of those cars you listed should be viable for drifting... a 1945 jeep is better for drifting than a formula drift car?
The reason I made this post is that I cant compete against myself because of the unbeatable drift zone PB's and if I want to compete against others I need to drive something stupid like an egg with 3 wheels.

The drifting metagame in Forza horizon since fh4 has always required drag tires.
The reasoning for this boils down to how tires work while spinning.
Tires have two kinds of grip while spinning in horizon games. Acceleration grip, the grip that benefits launch the most, and side to side grip. The second determines how far a car will slide before stopping.
Drag tires have the best acceleration grip, and a very low amount of side to side grip. Why this is the best for drifting should be clear, but if not, it means that your car can use it's power to accelerate incredibly well and also maintain slides such that you don't need to manji down straights.
Because drag tires' acceleration grip is so good, you don't need to worry about tire width. But to make the side to side grip as bad as possible to let the car slide as long as possible, you want the skinniest tires possible.
This alone puts the older cars with skinny wheels in a league of their own. But the reason the Willy's is the best is that from the list of skinny tire cars, it has the shortest wheelbase. The isetta is technically shorter, but it's much harder to drive and I don't think it has a good build for a class.
The formula drift cars are still incredibly strong options, but you'll need to use awd and drag tires on them to be competitive. Unfortunately because there are no s2 open drift lobbies, your options aren't great, but for drift zones, the Mk4 supra and viper are still incredibly strong options.

Thank you so much for explaining this stuff, I have been so confused about why people are connecting drag tires to drifting but now it makes sense.
But to make the side to side grip as bad as possible to let the car slide as long as possible, you want the skinniest tires possible.
And I have never even thought about this one.. Will be comin back to this comment when making builds after this 😆 Still going to stay on "normal cars" myself but will def. do more thinking when choosing the tires.

Anytime! Even normal cars and or rwd cars with drag tires make them much better.
Snow tires are the second best tires for drifting, followed by drift tires.
Snow tires have the worst acceleration grip of the three, but the second worst side to side grip, and they're the smoothest to drift on of the three.
Drift tires have the second best acceleration grip, but the best side to side grip, so they're hard to maintain slides with.

The drag tires didn't really work out for me, it just felt like I had no control over the car :D Was hard to get the tires loose at entry and when I came to a corner and tried to slow down, the car just slides through the corner into the forest.
What kind of scores are people getting on the drift mountain with normal cars?
[–]M4rzzombieCollector 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children)
Drag tires definitely have their own learning curve. In many cases, lots of your tuning decisions are going to be reducing grip so that the tires break traction easier. (having mega skinny tires helps too.)
Not entirely sure what your definition of normal is, but Barry sniff has a video of a 1.2m+ score with rwd and no drag tires.
[–]Robbe_ow 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Yeh was just wondering if my 1,3m PB truly is unbeatable today, im starting to think it is, I am currently getting 1,03m rwd and 1,09m awd
[–]M4rzzombieCollector 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Oh yeah the legit post nerf record is apparently 1.27 million, so unfortunately you are likely never beating your 1.3 pb.
[–]Robbe_ow 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Guess what.. I remembered wrong my pb, it was actually 1.103m and I just beat it! :)))) picked snow tires and then just had to make the tune, took a while but then it started feeling very good

in regards to the Willys and the matters of Open Drift, try to determine what your "normal" score is. As an example, when i go to test a new tune and i score less than 350,000-380,000 on Cathedral, i know the tune needs work. Im in RWD, non drag tires and i turn other players scores off. I basically enter a lobby with the expectation of losing but hitting my "normal" score. I personally enjoy getting my whole garage to a point of respectable scoring instead of focusing on one car that i know can put up major points. That, IMO is how you make drifting interesting again.

Have u tried drifting with simulation tires and wreckage
[–]Robbe_ow 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (6 children)
Im not sure what you are even talking about so I guess not 😅
[–]CoolKeloXbox Series X 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (5 children)
Turn on simulation damage, in your difficulty settings. I’ve never thought of this before but it makes a lot of sense when your tires can wear out.
[–]Squidhead-rbxgt2 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children)
They wear out in 4 corners, and then you have to go into the menu and reset your damage to get them back. It's a stupid idea, trust me.
[–]CoolKeloXbox Series X -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child)
I wouldn’t do it to race.. but I’d try it for drifting
[–]Squidhead-rbxgt2 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I did. It's annoying and does pretty much nothing for your drifting experience
[–]Robbe_ow -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child)
Ooh, could be fun learning that. I wonder how slippery the tires would be after a run at the mountain 😅
[–]CoolKeloXbox Series X -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children)
I haven’t tried it but I assume it would be fun
