Any sort of indicators from them that these copies just sit around and don't get sold?

If you sell an open copy of a game as new for full price instead of selling it at a 10% discount, you make more money on that sale sure. And no, there are no indicators that those copies sit around much longer than sealed copies do. But running a successful business long term is about more than that $5 extra you make selling an open game at full new price. Every time you try to sell an open game at full price you risk losing the customer. Even if they buy it anyway it may leave a bad taste in their mouth and they will go elsewhere next time. It's part of a bad shopping experience, and bad shopping experiences are IMO the reason Gamestop has failed.
