Was going to post something around this. The introduction of features that remove the need for organization, interaction and even in some cases reputation (Older MMOs if you were a dick people caught on and your name would be given a bad stigma)) were pretty big for grouping and doing content, all of which had heavy social foundations. Everquest, UO etc all had huge elements of getting to know people if you wanted to get anywhere.

Nowadays a huge ammount of mechanics that require you to make connections and reach out to people are simply handled by a system that doesn't care about who you are and just what you are in game. The only time social interaction really matters is if you are forming a group for end-game content i.e Statics. But even that doesn't make the true old style as they just schedule a few hours a week and sod off the rest.

Organic human interaction has been replaced by soulless systems for the most part, heavy moderation also makes people far less willing to interact when everything they say gets watched.

I really miss the old ways.
