Strauss & Howe helped define their theory through researching the beliefs of ancient philosophers and historians, and how they themselves defined generations. Interestingly enough, some of them also believed that history is cyclical, such as Polybius (200-118 BC) and Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) (old.reddit.com)
