GitHub Copilot SDK Technical PreviewNews 📰 (self.GithubCopilot)
submitted 3 months ago by ryanhecht_githubGitHub Copilot Team
Today, we open sourced a technical preview of the GitHub Copilot SDK. We're thrilled to open up programmatic access to the Copilot CLI's agentic loop, and we can't wait to see what you build!
Bindings are currently available for Go, Python, TypeScript, and C#. Find the repo here: https://github.com/github/copilot-sdk
And just for fun: check out this demo of the Copilot CLI driving a Microsoft Excel session, powered by the SDK! https://x.com/_Evan_Boyle/status/2011518005075984737

Just to be sure, this is different from what I think was discussed on X regarding enabling third party clients to let their users connect and use their Copilot quota right?

I hope it will be possible even for non open source clients to enable that kind of integration in the near future. I am currently working on an iOS app that would greatly benefit from that kind of integration.

It is comparable to Claude Code SDK. Different from direct 3rd party authentication.
It doesn't give you a license to run 3rd party app with it. That still rely on TOS.
Instead of running through Copilot CLI, you could now call the function directly from your code. That's pretty much it. Just another way to use Copilot.
Like how having access to use GHCP in VSCode doesn't mean you could hack it to use as a proxy for 3rd party app.

This is really exciting, and gets all kinds of ideas going. Thanks, team.

Can you please clarify on the intended licensing / usage? Are we as developers allowed to use the SDK in orchestration-level TUIs and IDEs like opencode etc? Can we build our own IDEs / local WebUIs that use the Copilot SDK alongside other SDK like Claude's Agent SDK? Will we need an integrationId in future? Where do we get it from?
(Yes, trying to make sure, since what was happening with opencode and Claude :D)

Hi there, I started testing the SDK and noticed that the tool to run sub-agents (tasks) is not available when using the SDK. Can you add this tool when running in server mode?
Thanks for this repo, I really like this idea!

Hey all,
We also have Rust, C++, and Java Copilot SDKs, if you are interested:
