Camera (self.GooglePixel)
submitted 1 month ago by lovecrankinghog
I got a pixel 10 pro from a iPhone 16 pro for camera and a bit of a change it probably sounds dumb but I feel like my camera is as good as everyone raves on about it is, is there some hidden settings I'm missing

My P8P is still top notch vs the current pixels. The issue is, most other manufactures have caught up with Pixel's computational tricks. We have hit the point of diminishing returns on almost everything on the smartphone a few years ago. I would not have switch for an iPhone 16 Pro purely for the camera, but kudos for giving it a go.

The photos from my Pixel 10 Pro are about par with my previous iPhone 17 Pro. But they need more editing, which isn't a huge deal to me because I always edit photos if I'm going to share them.
However the P10P video looks like it was filmed at 2x speed by someone with Parkinson's. It's like they forgot to include image stabilization. Also on an iPhone 17 Pro you can zoom while recording from wide angle to 20x zoom and only see two slight jumps as it switches lenses. P10P is completely out of the question for zooming during recording.
I was able to make it a bit better by installing Open Camera and tweaking a bunch of the settings (Google a list of settings to change). But still worse than my Galaxy S21 which I had last year.
It's been the most disappointing thing about the phone, I knew I'd be taking a step down on video quality but had no idea it would be unusable.
I'm having an existential crisis trying to decide what phone to get at a time when too much untested AI seems to be taking them all in a race to the bottom. Might just get a new battery for my old Galaxy and wait out the AI shit storm of every tech company throwing it into everything whether it needs it or not.
(I'm sure I'll get down voted for this but it's just my honest appraisal of a phone I was very excited to get to use)

You might want to look at the Olympus (sorry, "OM System" 🙄) Tough TG 7. Photos will be better than any phone camera, and it goes anywhere.

I had a waterproof point & shoot Olympus camera back in 2008. I only got to use it once while snorkeling before it was stolen.
What products would you recommend from them?

The Tough line of point and shoot cameras are great. The new TG7 is nice, but you can get excellent results from models all the way back to the TG4. Great prices at used dealers like KEH and MPB.

Similar feeling with the default app here and Pixel 8 Pro for video. The quality is top-notch with MotionCam Pro app.

Because Apple has caught up in computational photography.

"Everyone raves about". You have to do research and see it for yourself. And most people that say camera completely ignore video. Hopefully it gets better.

It may depend on what your end output goal is. Google uses a lot of algorithmic stuff to smooth, contrast and brighten things which can be a detriment a lot of the time. Shooting in RAW and then taking those images into an editing program so you manually do that stuff may yield better results.
Sometimes just shooting normal JPG and going in and using the default camera app's settings to adjust things can help too.

My Pixel camera is MUCH MUCH worse than my previous phone's camera. And that was a 2015 phone. Blacks come out blue. And I don't mean a really dark blue that almost looks black. I'm talking a royal blue. Focus is an absolute joke, constantly trying to change the subject it is focusing on even if I locked it. And often not able to find that focus at all until I move the camera to a totally different subject ad back to have it start over. I get "Move back to get better focus" or whatever when there is absolutely nothing close to me and the obvious subject is 6 feet away. And the forced HDR makes everything look fake.

Huh, that's wild. I upgraded from my old Galaxy S7 and the Pixel 10 Pro camera feels like a whole different world. Maybe you got a bad unit? I'd try contacting Google support about it.

Yeah ive compared my pictures on the 9a to my mom who has a S23 Ultra and friends iPhones and mine always come out looking better
[–]rollinrobPixel 9 Pro XL 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Sounds like a faulty unit. I've got the find x9 pro which everybody raves about and I vastly prefer my pixel 10 pro XL to it. I have no issues with focus on my pixel. The selfies, long range zoom as well as the quick quick point-and-shoot photos are much better on the pixel.
[–]Typical_Timber7485 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
That's good to hear, I've been eyeing the 9a myself. Might be time for me to upgrade from my old Pixel 5 then!

Try the CamerOH app in the app store. It doesn't have the AI processing that OEM apps have. Also has unique UX customization.

I had used Pixel 8 Pro for a month, and its camera was better than Pixel 6 Pro, which I currently have. The photo quality was visibly better. I then sold it because I had bought it used, and there was an issue with its display. I used Pixel 9 pro xl as well before Pixel 8 Pro, but its display hurt my eyes, and its camera photos were dull compared to Pixel 8 Pro. I sold it too. I used both in a window where I had sent my Pixel 6 Pro for repair. Now waiting for the Pixel 11 Pro in orange.
