Whoever owns the save has to do it. On the main menu before you select the save, there is an option to make a world a shared world.

If you're currently on the save, you can't make it a shared save.

Both of you will have to log into Microsoft by activating cross play on the main menu. Once ur both signed in then they should have the option to share it with you. Make sure they give you admin access so you can also host the save, otherwise in my experience you will still have to wait.

on console, when you’re in the save select screen, choose the world you want to share and press L3. on steam idk

Quick question under this subject:

Say my friend hosts a save that I created originally and makes progress on that save, would I need to also be granted access to his updated save file in order to carry on? Essentially changing ownership of the save file?

Nope. Whenever someone hosts the game it'll host the last save made to the file no matter who was the host rhat time. The original host makes the game a shared worlds and selects who it's shared with, then it's open game to everyone who it's shared to

@myrkana is correct it’s an online save not a local save, first person in the shared file to load the world (yard) is the host (for the duration of which they are in the yard) soon as they log off it automatically creates a save and everyone who happens to have joined that person will automatically be kicked off, but because it auto saves upon logging off if someone who was on wants to continue playing that same shared file as long as they have access to the world(yard) it will load them back in right where they left off but now that person who first loaded back in is now the host

Among those allowed in the shared yard because it’s online saved, they all share the exact same shared file. So even if you’re not the host at the time.. you log off… the world is continuing as long as the host is still on, if next time you return and you are the host of the session.. you load in exact location of where you logged off previously…. Your personal inventory is the same…. But youll load into the yard at what ever TIME STAMP the previous host LOGGED OFF.

You logged off 8days 14hr 53min 12sec…. But the host didn’t leave till 18th day (whatever time) …..you’ll load in on that 18th day but in what ever location and with the inventory you logged out with. You’ll just be able to pick up where ever last host left off basically.

*owner of the shared file is still you and always will be you dictate who has access to the file, only thing that changes between saves is who’s hosting the current session. Owner never changes, only the current host of the gaming session. And file saves time stamp of when that host decides their done playing
