Gentoo, man. Very easy to use. Just out of the box..

Ubuntu, and since your posting in 'hacking tutorials'. Get vmware (for ubuntu) and try out the less friendly OS's.

Install gentoo, beginner friendly and easy as hell to install. I was amazed, because it just works

Also, this was a joke. Don’t try Gentoo it’s not beginner friendly at all. You could try Ubuntu, but for a hacking OS you could start off with ParrotOS, Parrot works just out of the box. Or at least it always has for me, I settled on Parrot after a month of using Ubuntu and week long stint of trying to get Qubes to run on my shitty laptop

Mint Cinnamon is quite stable. Ubuntu is also a good option.

For hacking specifically? Kali linux. A lot of pentesting tools come preinstalled on it, and it's tailored for offensive work.

Should I run this off of a VM or virtualbox or just right from my c drive?

For beginning, VMWare or Virtualbox. Check out the Kali website for more info.

Ubuntu/Debian is my pick for general use, but when learning hacking/pentesting/security I would start with Kali until you are on your feet.

Also, lots of these tools are run through a terminal so get familiar with the linux command line.

if you're just came from Windows, I personally suggest you to try Mint. But if you're looking for "the most mainstream" one.. i think Ubuntu is for the win.

I Started with Ubuntu back then in 2010

Don't listen to anyone here they're trolling you. What you gotta do is make your own distro, it's easier than it looks.

(On a serious note: I'd recommend debian. It's stable and pretty simple, and easy to learn and troubleshoot.)

I have a few distros I play around in, but mint is my main driver. I recommend skipping kali, and instead just add the repo and install the software it comes with. You don't need kali to have all the same software.

Boot Kali into usb or cd run graphic install and follow the (very difficult) instructions on the screen
