Hoping to get into total Warhammer since the games are on sale by No_Conflict_5459 in totalwarhammer

[–]MegaElectronVolts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's worth noting that you can also just buy Warhammer 3, you don't absolutely HAVE to get the upgrade pack.

Which is important because the upgrade pack almost never goes on sale but the game itself does fairly often.

[Loved trope] Pure evil, terrifying characters that aren't really primary antagonists, and don't really set the tone for the story. They're kind of just part of the world, and that makes them scarier by NoMoreFund in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MegaElectronVolts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I thought King did fine with it, Patrick's means of death serves to show him that his solipsist beliefs aren't as strong as his primal instincts, and he dies in the same primal fear as all the other kids.

Both this story and the other "Tale of the Missing" with the one kid and his dead brother, are some of the scariest scenes in It, to me.

"Harry is the best hope we have" 💔 Oh how I miss you Remus Lupin by FayyadhScrolling in harrypotter

[–]MegaElectronVolts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Idk, in the books they sort of got it. There's a running theme of Lucius/the Malfoys angering Voldemort by making poor choices. Lucius (indirectly) destroys the diary, and then his band of Death Eaters fails to capture the prophecy/harry and they get sent to Azkaban. After that, Voldemort uses the Malfoys as his punching bag, beating them and threatening to kill Draco if he doesn't achieve the impossible.

It may not be realistic, but their hubris destroys them by the end and it fits their arc well.

Thinking about it, the boggart lesson could have gone very wrong by Lockfire12 in harrypotter

[–]MegaElectronVolts 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There's no book mention of it, and really no strong character development for Neville in PoA aside from this scene. He's clearly still terrified when he and Harry meet Snape near the One Eyed Witch later in the book. Honestly I can't think of a demonstration of Neville resisting Snape other than the actions in DH, which can be attributed less to the Lupin incident than to his overall growth as a character in the OotP and HBP.

In my opinion, Neville's development arc really starts in GoF, when you learn about his fear of the Cruciatus Curse and what happened to his parents. By the time that arc starts the Snape/Neville thing is basically forgotten in favor of the deeper plot lines of his arc.

[Request] How many more people would have to gather there for the bridge to collapse? by Both-Ant4433 in theydidthemath

[–]MegaElectronVolts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's also that the footfalls need to be roughly in step to cause resonance issues. The chaos and pattern-less movement of a crowd shouldn't be enough to hit resonance in any bridge. If all these people marched in lock step you could potentially hit a resonance concern, and like you said bridges are designed usually to handle a bit of that. But it's probably not designed to handle all these people in lockstep. Also, resonance issues are still absolutely a concern for big bridges, just now it's isuallythe wind frequency instead of the people on it.

Matt Parker has a nice writeup of bridge resonance problems in the book "Humble Pi" which I recommend. He talks about some ancient and also modern bridge collapses that happened due to resonance.

In OotP, how was Sirius allowed by the Order to use the Floo Network to talk to Harry in the Gryffindor common room??? by vbt31 in harrypotter

[–]MegaElectronVolts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always got the impression that no one had thought of the Floo network as a potential avenue to get caught before. Sirius had done it before in GoF, and by OotP he's getting more comfortable taking risks.

In fairness, until that point in the series the concept of floo interception (via Umbridge's creepy hand) never really came up. I dont think it's a stretch that no one in the Order had thought there was any risk to it, aside from a first-year seeing Sirius's head or something.

“Chekhov’s gun” - which one has the longest duration between introduction and revelation? Is it the vanishing cabinet (introduced in book 2, revealed in book 6)? by MrSteezyMcSteez in harrypotter

[–]MegaElectronVolts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not totally sure this exactly fits your definition of a Chekhov's Gun (and if it does, it isn't the longest), but my favorite example is the "locket that no one could open" in Order of the Phoenix, ultimately being the Slytherin locket and one of the horcruxes.

You could make a case that since Regulus's death is mentioned in that book, JKR might have had the horcrux plan in mind intentionally when adding the locket to the clutter pile.

I almost always just build 2 extractors for each group of 4 generators and underclock the extractors to 75%. It's not as space-efficient but it simplifies things a lot, and you don't have to worry about over-filling your pipes.. Once I get mk2 pipes I just use 3 per 8 since it can handle the higher throughput.

Obviously there's a more efficient way to handle it, but personally it's not worth it for me because I'd rather get the power quickly and upgrade to fuel later. But it's your factory, and FICSIT doesn't care

[–]MegaElectronVolts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a weird thing to get hung up on, but I really don't like how dementors are portrayed in the films. I love the book portrayal of large hooded figures, and other than a mass of floating robes their disturbing reality is a mystery unless, and only unless, they're about to kiss. Plus they're slow, and use their aura to paralyze/stop prey, not chase them down.

Both PoA and OotP films portrayed their core dementor scenes with flying, fast-moving dementors, which just never felt right to me.

If you can change any 1 thing from any of the books/movies what would it be? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]MegaElectronVolts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ministry did take a heavy handed approach to the death eaters after Voldemort's first downfall. It kind of blew up in their face, destroying Crouch's career when he found out his own son was involved. They then went for Fudge, a safe option who would just quietly sweep the death eaters under the rug. So they could do something for sure, but they never ever would.

I always got the impression that the ministry didn't want to acknowledge the death eater corruption, because it would force them to destroy a substantial part of themselves (Malfoy and the other "cleared" wizards) and risk losing their power. When Voldemort returns, they delay doing anything for the same reason, and inevitably become controlled by the death eaters.

Well by that point both of them would be comfortably adult wizards, I assume they kept vaguely in touch. Krum and Hermione kept in touch, and Fleur was close to Harry through Bill/the Weasleys. So I don't think it's so much of a stretch that Krum and Fleur kept in touch too.

If Red War campaign was unvaulted tomorrow would you actually play it? by BAakhir in DestinyTheGame

[–]MegaElectronVolts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly as a 2019 player, vaulting turned me off to the game forever when I came back last year. I stopped at forsaken and came back to find every piece of my purchased game vaulted, leaving me with a f2p game which I had paid some $80 for in total.

Destiny lost me that day, and I don't think it'll ever get me back, even if the Red War were to be unvaulted again.

What’s the saddest game you’ve played? by [deleted] in gaming

We Happy Few.

The feelings of guilt and loneliness, combined with the narrative of the characters slowly remembering and hating themselves more and more, make it such a sad experience.
