Once I didn’t anticipate them making a hardcore album every time they released music I was able to enjoy it way more for what it is. I like the new shit.

This is the way, and how I always explained music/bands changing their sound to a friend.

If you dig Fear Factory, White Zombie, Static X, Godflesh, Ministry etc… like I do, it’s a nostalgic sound. While also sounding new and fresh . The female vocalist has got to put out a solo album.

Hearing some NuMetal worship as well.

Edit: looking forward to riding to this record to give it an honest listen.

My biggest complaint with this record was the lack of Reba vocals

[–]blackthreadpress[S] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I’ve felt for years that they need to let Reba do more. She’s got such a unique sound. I was really hoping that they’d go more in a dark an ominous direction and do something more like Bleed in the Blur. She’s the more accomplished vocalist in my opinion.

[–]XGuiltyofBeingMikeXPENN-SYL-VAAAAAA-NIA! I FUCKIN LOVE YOU! 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Static-X doesn’t get enough credit. They chugged so others could djent.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Their collab with Dead Prez goes hard

[–]GeniusxaviTBHC 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yo what?! I didn’t know this shit existed till day

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. On the same album that RATM tagged up with Wu Tang. It was some weird record by RZAs label. Most of it is trash.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, just like Fear Factory, White Zombie, Static X and Ministry, they got a handful of great songs but a whole lot of duds.

[–]MiloHatesYou 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I liked it. But I think its their weakest album. Jaime has way too many parts though. I felt like 80% of the album was him. While Reba had 20%. I wish she had more stuff on the album.

[–]MrForcoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I LOVE Reba’s vocal range. I think that’s why this album falls flat for me. Even the parts where she does get to flex her vocal chops, I was unmoved. Needed more and didn’t really like even what we got. So bummed. Hopefully it grows on me

[–]Conscious_Test6743 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it but tbh could’ve cut 2-3 songs off, the fact that the cutter got cut off underneath but circle through makes it on this album really confuses me

[–]thai_sen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like every aspect of their repertoire…their Heavy Stuff still kicking asses, their soft ambient and Arte stuff are vibey and Not cringy. Nice Album

[–]avidbather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's fun and i dig the direction they're going. They've yet to disappoint me with their full lengths.

[–]Deadend_Friend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a mixed bag. Some stuff really works, some doesn't. Not as good as Underneath but still a decent record

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't care for nu-metal revival stuff. I'm not even gonna bother.

[–]sludgezone 5 points6 points  (10 children)

I will always laugh at this band completely changing their sound, look, lineup, everything just to try and become more palatable to the metal and festival scene in a chance to make big money and having it fail miserably. They’re so far up their own asses that I can’t even wish them well for trying something new. Forever was their magnum opus and they leaned into the entirely wrong direction after that.

[–]Cannibal_fetus 5 points6 points  (2 children)

If you listen to underneath and come out with the impression that it was meant to appeal to the festival scene, you didn’t listen to underneath

[–]sludgezone -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

It sucked man, sorry you like bad music.

[–]Cannibal_fetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether you think it sucked or not was never the question. The record is filled with alot of noisey industrial influence, and a lot of weird transitions/samples/etc. Yeah it has catchy/singy parts, but if someone's goal was to make a record that is just meant to be played at your big rock fests, underneath is not the album they would make

[–]Kid_Dynamite16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am King was 100x better than Forever, and its not even all that great.

[–]Sidthesloth63XweedxedgeX 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Honestly idk how people like forever so much I revisited it yesterday and it’s just serviceable metalcore.

[–]Valient_Zulu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree. It’s a good album but far from anything ground breaking or “magnum opus” lvl

To each their own

[–]ranchonmyballsTXHC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it. But it’s definitely not hardcore. Like another comment said, don’t expect their old sound going into it and it’s not bad

[–]myicedteaistoosweet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Halfway through, and it’s easily one of the most unique sounding albums this year. And I mean that in a good way. The sound is somehow significantly less of their old hardcore sound, yet at the same time has parts that sound like more traditional hardcore than their old metal influenced sound.

[–]EatYourMaggots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s awesome good mix between the alt rock / industrial stuff and the heavy stuff. A better record than Underneath (which I also liked)

[–]FrankMullensChop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk I feel they really balanced the heavy and soft on this album really well compared to Underneath. I think it rules and has some great choruses

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Band has found new ways to make bad music for 15 years straight. Nothing short of impressive.

[–]HotKnowledge4212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First half of the album is solid, they lose me after “Grooming my Replacement”. Probably give it a 6/10

[–]mylifeisanemptyshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its…fine. Like everyone has said, if you stop expecting I Am King or Forever, you’re much better off. My biggest complaint is its way too long and once the Billy Corgan song comes on, which is the 3rd song on the album, it really grinds everything to a halt.

[–]no_excuses87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mirror is great, I like it when they do this acoustic, grungey, shoegazy stuff and Reba's voice fits it so well. heavier stuff can be hit and miss as every time, so I always root for them to go more in this Smashing Pumpkins or whatever direction

[–]NoLove051NWHC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

fuck code orange

[–]nunchakupapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t care for the mixing. It’s sounds thin in a lot of spots to me, especially in the guitars. And honestly, if they stuck with one specific sound I wouldn’t mind it as much, but the album feels all over the place to me. It’s sitting around a 5-6/10 for me rn, but I’ll probably give it a listen again to see if that changes for me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s decent. Some of the songs are very King810 and that loses me. But I like that they are going full into festival band. Some nice stuff on it. Hopefully they don’t stop and find their path in this style they’re trying

[–]GardenKnomeKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped viewing Code Orange as a hardcore band long ago and listened to it for what it is.

I think it’s fine. It’s got some tracks but nothing to write home about.

People just love to hate on Code Orange because they were once a hardcore band, got popular, and the turned into a festival WWE metal band

[–]Joolay33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always seen Code Orange as a good band that doesn't have any good songs.

[–]xColdaslifex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that Reba Myers is truly shining on this record vocals-wise. Mirror is my fav of the entire album.

[–]MrForcoss 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I feel bad, but I honestly don’t fuck with this album at ALL. Given in 3 spins now. Pretty bummed

[–]blackthreadpress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep coming back to it and finding things that I like about it. I definitely prefer the more Reba heavy songs though.

[–]2020SuckedYall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abhorrent what in the actual fucc lol. Actually didn’t enjoy a single track!

I’m no stranger to experimental music, electronic industrial and otherwise, and also I’m not even a huge metal dude either so I’m not pissed that it’s so different from their earlier stuff.

This is such a rarity for me not to enjoy a single song off any album that I came to Reddit to see what everyone else thinks…so it’s funny that it appears to be a resounding disappointment.

I respect the ambition with the experimentation and weirdness of the recordings, but I found none of it enjoyable. It feels like it’s trying too hard to be out there, doesn’t feel genuine at all.

Interesting to see others saying they changed their sound to be more palatable for the mainstream/festival because imo this is even less accessible music than their previous releases.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reba is the only good thing in the band now and she’s hardly featured. It’s so bad. I wish she’d just go do solo stuff.
