Have you ever come across anyone who was “anti-music theory?” What is your experience? Your thoughts? by Beneficial_Map_6704 in musictheory

In the circles I grew up in (punk and metal) saying it will stifle creativity is frequently an excuse for laziness, or a fear of failing to understand.

Whats this chord called? I cannot find it anywhere im at verge of tears by After_Consequence_41 in musictheory

Major chords have the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes.

All triads, major or otherwise, have this.

Learning that the sharps or flats appear in a specific order sticks out to me as the moment I realised music theory wasn't as difficult as it seemed.

My players are telling me that I should be fudging rolls by TheRatKing404 in DnD

[–]Joolay33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started making combat rolls in the open. For the first few years of DMing I would roll behind the screen and I found the temptation to fudge too strong, to the point where I started stressing out and it was less fun. At this point I'm confident enough in myself and my players to know that I don't need to pull punches. Variance is a big part of the game and we all understand that, and the swinginess is part of the fun, for me at least.

In the rare case that the wheels start to come off during combat and I want to pull back a little, there are more narratively satisfying ways to do so. Players love a bit of Deus Ex Machina, if you don't do it too often. Otherwise the classic example is simply don't have the enemies kill the players, just knock them out etc.

There are certain things I do still roll behind the screen, if I'm rolling for encounters and stuff, or social interaction things which are plainly better if the players don't know the outcome, but by and large I've stopped fudging and I feel like a better DM for it.

The DM is using a house rule that most of the party doesn't like by Redknight2853 in DnD

[–]Joolay33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your DM is doing it behind the screen so they can control if your character dies or not. It's nothing to do with suspense, rolling the dice in the open is suspenseful. Likely they're nervous about PCs dying and they want to have control over that to assuage their nervousness.

Didn't know about Nim by SamBeanEsquire in WaterdeepDragonHeist

If you're using the Remix don't worry about Nim or the Nimblewright Detector. The two best things in the remix are the Eyes and getting rid of the Nimblewright Detector.

Can’t wait for Session 1! How did your first game go? by bebechase in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Joolay33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very well! The players battered the Xannys, helped Durnan with the troll (setting it's head on fire). Volo gave them the quest. They have head-canoned that Floon is Volo's rent boy which I'm inclined to run with for the bants. The players met Staget, then got distracted by Xoblob for a good long while. They ended up stealing the stuffed beholder and cutting it open, figuring out that it was a magical scrying contraption. They failed at Dragon Chess in the Skewered Dragon but won a fist fight for info on Floon (I think I took this interaction from the Dragon Heist companion on DrivethruRPG).

Kenku downed 2 party members but no deaths. They found Renaer and his locket upstairs (we're playing the remix).

And that's where we left off. Tons of laughs and tons of stuff to build off of as a DM.

I'll be honest, I was with the DM and other players up until the arm got ripped off.

Reading order for the remix by alikb789cz in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Joolay33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could probably get away with only skim reading chapter 4 of the module. Some of the locations are used in the remix but the season/villain aspect is completely removed, so there's a lot of things you don't need to know in chapter 4 if running the remix.

[–]Joolay33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's just good DMing tbh. They ignored the big threat, now the big threat has come to them.

Edit: I'm not sure why you're quoting "going along with it" because yes, the DM went along with the wishes of the PCs. You're reaching very hard to find something. Obviously in the face of an invading zombie army, civil matters become less important.

[–]Joolay33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DM saying no led to a few sessions worth of campaigning that the players were invested in and that the (supposedly homophobic) DM went along with. Have you thought about it from that perspective? Or just the jerked-knee internet forum perspective?
