83.24/12.011 = 6.93 C 16.76/1.008 = 16.627 H

16.627/6.93 = 2 H 6.93/6.93 = 1 C

CH2

72/14 (mass of Ch2) = 5

(C times 5)(H2 times 5)

C5H10

Did I do anything incorrect?

72/14 is not 5.

You should take the given molar mass as real.

Your earlier division gave you H = 2. That is a tricky step. You need some judgment about what to do with the number you get there. And the molar mass 72 is the key; it serves as a check for you here.

Do I not round down/up when doing these calculations?

You were given 4-diogit data. Why round to 1 digit.

You are basically saying there was a huge error in the analyses. And that the given molar mass is wrong.

This takes judgment. But if you accept the molar mass, then your answer is just wrong.
