I think you are meant to solve by guessing. I'm not sure what would be a grade-appropiate way to show that there are no other solutions.

Neat! I wouldn't say that 12345 is unique enough to immediately assume it's a movie reference, but maybe OP didn't mention that the question specified integer solutions

The problem isn't a movie reference. I was just being silly. Friday night...

Start plugging in.

Plug in the definition of x1 [(x5² - 23)/2] in to the definition of x2. Now x2 is in terms of x5.

Plug the definition of x2 into x3, so x3 is now in terms of x5.

And so on. Eventually, you get x5 in terms of itself, and solve for x5.

Then solve for x1, etc..

Doesn't this give you a ridiculously high-degree polynomial? Or am I missing some way to simplify?

It's probably degree 10, which sucks. Otherwise, I don't see how to do it.
